I use Goodreads and I have 3 'shelves' to log books I've read, currently reading, and want to read. It's very handy for when I get suggestions of books I might like from people, I can quickly add them to my To Read list so I don't forget (I work in a library so this happens a lot). The best feature is the daily email update from friends where I get a short email with links to books friends have read or added. I've read a few books because of liking the sound of them from the blurbs in these emails. You can also follow authors and get emails telling you about their new books.

I only get a monthly newsletter, I think. I’m coming to the end of Beyond Black. Never has a book been so well-titles, it is dark and disturbing and gets increasingly unpleasant the more it goes on. It’s very good, but you feel like you want to wear gloves to hold it, and when I finish it I’m going to take a long, hot bath. |

Yes! That's exactly how I felt about it. I have to admit it didn't make me want to read any more HM but it has stayed with me. Perhaps I should try another one.

Well, of the ones I've read, Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies are both superb, but quite hefty. The collection of short stories entitled The Assassination Of Margaret Thatcher was enjoyable. The thing about Mantel is that most of her books are quite different from one another is subject and style (except, of course, the Tudor trilogy), so I would try whichever one you like the sound of from the synopsis.

Ooh, Beyond Black. The only HM I've read, but as you've said it stuck with me. Can you recommend any novels with contemporary settings?
