Clever those Russians - they recognise a democracy is only as good as the information circulating.

I'm not convinced it played a huge role in Brexit though, we had our home grown ministers of misinformation and hyperbole doing a much better job, plus a national chip on the shoulder about people on the continent meddling in our affairs.

The tangible benefit of leaving though, is that there is one less layer between the voter and the person in power and so the voter feels they have more direct influence over what happens.

I bet it was clear from the context and the tone of his voice that he did not mean that.

FFS. Just watched the video. He was talking about unemployment caused by technology and he said

Challenged on the impact of wider automation on people's jobs, he said Britain had to "embrace change", adding: "I remember 20 years ago we were worrying about what was going to happen to the million shorthand typists in Britain as the personal computer took over.
"Well, nobody has a shorthand typist these days, but where are all these unemployed people?
"There are no unemployed people because we have created 3.5m new jobs since 2010."

Clearly the context was that the PC did not cause mass unemployment.

That's not even a slip of the tongue. It's clearly a valid thing to say in that context.

There is plenty that we can all be unhappy about in how the Tories are dealing with the country/economy/Brexit etc. But this is absolutely nothing. I am not sure if any heavyweight politicians have really pounced on it. Would probably say more about them that Hammond if they did.

But the BBC have the headline "Hammond says there is no unemployment". With headlines like that they can not complain about what was written on the side of a bus.

The Guardian are doing the same, but I'd expect that more.

I agree, Binks, with your explanation that he meant the PC did not cause mass unemployment. But he then claims that:

"There are no unemployed people because we have created 3.5m new jobs since 2010."

I think this is what people should be questioning. But, as you say, with the Brexit clusterfuck and everything else that they have touched turning into shite, it is small beans...

Yes I would certainly dispute the "we" part of "we created 3.5m jobs". But that's not where political discourse takes place nowadays.

funny, I didn't read it that way at all. I read it as he considered unemployment at such a low rate he was not concerned about it. It looked flippant and a misunderstanding how an awful lot of people still struggle in this country. I also imagine that interpretation comes from you own ideas of how a conservative chancellor thinks.

In macroeconomics, full employment is considered to be achieved when the unemployment rate is 3-5% I believe.

The UKs unemployment rate is approx 4.3% isn’t it?

Are you suggesting that's what Hammond meant? He didn't, it is as Binks says above and the BBC headline is on this occasion just plain daft.
