I doubt if that's one of the criteria. It needs to be added.

I think Turkey is actively moving away from the concept of democracy as an ideal to aspire to. TMW's point is a good one. I suspect that in Erdogan's eyes, democracy has had its day, and strong man politics are the way forward.

Some interesting reading in the German press about May's dinner date with the EU faz.net (google translate to English).

In the article there is an interesting angle on the UK divorce bill, France and Germany see the UK underpaying as them having to bail us out whilst we leave. Funnily enough that won't go down very well with their voters.

And for those who think we are paying a convincing 'game of poker':

"Their initial threat that "no deal is better than a bad deal" does not play any role in the negotiations at all. Macron has publicly pointed out this, in Berlin this is confirmed. "

Well, unlike May, at least Macron and Merkel actually a) speak in sentences that don't read like shit acrostics b) they realise that "no deal" would be economic suicide, except for the insouciant rich and in all likelihood financial services would move to EU countries, boosting their prosperity.

All in all, I am more inclined to believe that Macron and Merkel have confirmed what it is claimed in the article than relegate it to "fake news" or "alternative facts" or pathetic bluffing- seems like we have the monopoly on that one.

I'll say it again for those who didn't understand the first time round. If the possibility of us leaving the negotiations without a deal is not seriously on the table, then we will inevitably get a terrible deal. The EU would know that they could offer us any old crap and we would either have to accept it, or not leave the EU.

So saying that the UK viewing 'no deal' as a possibility doesn't play a role in the negotiations is obviously bollocks, whatever Macron and Merkel say about it.

No deal is always a fall though option - if everything else fails it's what happens.

Posturing as if we'd be happy with it as an OK result is the bit that nobody with half a brain believes.

SFL, it's more likely that people didn't agree with you, rather than that they failed to understand you the first time round. I don't think most of the EU leaders are any more impressed than I am by the threat that if the EU doesn't give us what we want, we'll chop our own legs off, which is what this amounts to.

SFL- it's hardly a serious threat if the EU isn't too bothered about it, is it? "They've threatened to ruin their economy, Monsieur le President" "De toute facon, that'll happen anyway" Which is how Brexit will be viewed across the EU.

Due to the cack-handed manner in which the UK has approached Brexit we have eroded any good ill that could have led to a more amicable arrangement. Unless of course you think this is a masterly strategy worthy of Sun Tzu?

I see Fozzys mp, who he spoke so highly of, has been exposed as a homophobic and misogynist type. Kinder and gentler politics...
