Am I one of those 'unemployed'?
I think I'm retired, but not yet state pension age, living off a company pension & savings and not looking or wanting work.

I don't want to go veg picking in Lincs. But I anticipate a 10 - 20% rise in prices for some of our key home grown, manually picked fruit & veg. I'm not sure how much you'd need to pay me to stand in a cold, wet, windy field for 8 - 10 hours. And maybe 1 - 2 hour commute if it's not a local field?

But the law of supply and demand would indicate the labour price will go up if the 'cheap' labour isn't there and the supermarkets (and then the consumer) accept the increase vs switch to something 'automated'.

How long will it be before in order to get benefits you'll have to do one of these unskilled jobs?

If they couldn’t get “cheap” Labour, I reckon the crops would rot where they are.

Doubt you’re included in the statistics if you don’t receive any benefits um.

"Work until you drop" seems to be the Tory policy now. Won't be long before the state pension age is raised again...

i think it's absolutely great for students to put in a few shifts picking fruit through the summer, and I nearly did some of it myself back in the day but never got round to it for various reasons. I think it's probably more fun for them to do it in a foreign country as a working holiday. And there is a lot of similar work that doesn't fit in to student holidays.

I'm probably also economically inactive according to govt stats - certainly have been for some of the past 5 years, though I do have a contract for work this year. The price of leeks would have to go up a long way if someone wanted to pay me to pick them!

Automation is a good idea and I used to work at a place that developed things like blackcurrant pickers and chicken harvesters (yes really). There already is quite a bit of mechanisation for many tasks, but this takes time and money to implement.

Johnny Blaze, I’ve always thought eventually they’ll get round to charging us for the air we breathe.

If not the air itself, then certainly the necessary filters etc. to render it safely breathable.

What's the thinking among Remainy people here about what the Government is or is not doing to prevent us from falling out without a deal with the EU at the end of the year? All the signals are very, very bad at the moment and I think it's highly probable we will end up without a deal. But is this a deliberate policy, something they actively want and for which they hope to be able to blame the EU (which I'm sure they will do successfully), in which case, why? My belief is rather that it's just irresponsible laziness, playing to the crowd rather than getting to grips with messy reality. But I could be persuaded otherwise.
