Congrats to SOD as part of the GB Team management, on a great success!

The athlete who started his career at my own club, East Cornwall Harriers, and is part of the team SOD was managing, landed bronze in the World 50k championships. An amazing result and I think given that just over three months ago Dan was barely able to run, better than could have been possibly hoped for.

Can a LiRF take a group on a night-time head torch run off-road, or do you need to be a CiRF?

Depends on your intrepretation of the 'rules'? I think SoD suggested that it may not be a great idea.

^^ cirf won't cover you for it. By off road d'ya mean out in the hills technical terrain or local park/paths?

Pretty sure as a Lirf if you've risk assessed the activity & it's non-technical & near civilisation then you're ok?

I'd need to dig out my course resources to confirm for sure though.

I don't mean out in the wilderness away from civilisation. I mean more out and back from our club base, so off-road away from street lights, -woods, fields, unlit farm tracks etc

"Can a LiRF take a group on a night-time head torch run off-road?"

The clue is in the name of the qualification "Leadership in Running Fitness". Yes, you can lead a group of runners, off-road at night time as long as your doing so in alignment with the terms of your LiRF license.

If you're talking about a LiRF providing a session of 'coaching off road running' then that would be a different thing entirely.

This thought is a little controversial with the NGB....a piece of paper does not a coach make. I know plenty of great coaches out there who don't hold a LiRF, CiRF, or any formal qualification from the NGB.

I wonder sometimes if the NGB is just a little too restrictive with it licensing and insurance.

Agree entirely. We did have a reassuring conversation about insurance, licences and what was and wasn't ok last year with our regional rep. We feel a little more relaxed about our club sessions as a result.
