I always thought he was South African too. Turns out he's Australian, but grew up in Mexico and now lives in Ireland. He wrote the most nuts book about writing I've ever read. It has a section on different drugs can effect the creative process.

I've read two DBCP fiction books (one being his Booker winner) and although being easy reading and actually quite funny, neither impressed that much, they're a bit lightweight.
