Hmm, that's one I considered as a gift for Liebling. Good to know it's a good un. Her birthday's not for a while though.

I was interested in h is for hawk particularly as I read the TH White book as a child but it isn’t what I’d call a cheery read

The TH White is referenced massively in H is for Hawk, in fact you almost feel the need to have read it first!

The only T.H. White book I can remember reading is The Sword in the Stone, and there are certainly hawks in that, but I think that's not the one you're talking about?

While waiting patiently for C-Mode (and having cancelled the one I'd ordered and which didn't seem to be forthcoming) I have started "The Story of Alice", - a sort of biography of Lewis Carroll with the emphasis on his Alice books.

MrsP is currently 130 miles away tending to her aged and ailing parents. She has my C-Mode and may have read it by the time I see her again on Sunday.

I loved that book. Especially the duel between Merlin and Madame Mim.

Ah... it is not that book I refer to but, The Goshawk by T H White and his very doomed attempts to train a goshawk, than Helen Macdonald uses as cautionary tale on how not to train a goshawk.
