It does seem ludicrous that people will drive 5, 10 , 20, 50 plus miles to run 3 miles and then drive the same back again.

If it is an unfamiliar place, there is often pleasure to be had in the trip itself. And I usually will have a look around a place and points in between as well. And, since I live in a small town, take the chance to go to big town shops if I need (many parkruns, especially, are near a Lidl).

And hmm, are you suggesting five miles is a bit far? For me the number of parkruns within five miles drive is currently zero (at some point to be one, but not one I'd want to run on any regular basis). Within ten miles: one; within twenty, two.

(I know some people who have flown thousands of miles to run just 26.2.)

Oh no :-o A second inaugural!

If it was local streets being swamped by parking then the Council's statement “It will be back on October 6 and we hope the runners come out again for that one as they did for the first one” might not be the best thing to wish for.

(Still, it's good that it will return.)

@Iricey for alot of people if they didn't travel more than 5 miles they would never do a park run, not all of us live south of Birmingham. My nearest is roughly 50miles away.

Although I do agree it seems ridiculous to make these large journeys (unless you have other things planned) just to run a 5k if you have plenty on your doorstep

I often tie my touristing in with visiting local tourist attractions. It's rare I'll drive for two hours, run for 45 minutes and drive straight back home. But I do look up interesting parkrun courses further away and then plan a full day trip or weekend out taking in parkrun. I also often use parkrun as the first 3 miles of marathon training runs, so I'll drive further to get to a large park, estate or woodland I can get 13+ miles of unique pathway in easily.

I'm use to driving long distances to get to work though. As an agency worker I never usually even know what county I'm going to be working in each day. So driving 50 miles to a new parkrun is just the same to me as a normal commute.

I've done all my very local parkruns and to be honest aren't a huge fan of the courses. I do them when I have to due to time restraints. I'd much rather travel longer to the prettier courses.

A can of worms would be opened criticising the economics/ethics of how far you might travel for a parkrun once a week. A whopping can of worms. I was once criticised for not recycling an empty can of tuna (I thought it too smelly for the can bank) by a guy who commuted 60 miles a day for work and regularly holidayed in remote far-flung countries, such as Vietnam, via airplanes, just to confirm his worldy-wise coolness. However, he did wear designer sandals at the weekend so had a right to lecture me. Motto: Encourage a personal lifestyle that minimises an individual's enviromental footprint without negating the joy and benefits of travel, meeting new people, and do this without lecturing. Signed: "We who will not stay in our caves all day long".

There may be an inaugural parkrun happening near you. Best to check with the local parkrun volunteers to see if they want you to know about it or not.

Otherwise there are plenty of already established parkruns to go to in the UK and abroad, see: parkrun.org.uk
