I used to see him when I cycled in - but I'd bugger off for breakfast/shower etc. He would leave at 7pm as a matter of course. So a 60 hour week, as a norm with working from home and at weekends thrown in as well. I did a fag packet calc that worked out that for the three years he'd worked there, he'd given them another year. They got rid of him after those three years and parachuted someone else in they'd headhunted.

A few years ago I kind of snapped, and now I feel no obligation at all to routinely work more than I'm supposed to (vs staying late to do a specific thing, which I'm happy to do). It's a bit of a weird feeling, but quite liberating.

I give a certain amount for free, mainly because I forget to record it, and I don't charge them for prevarication. I earn so much more than I did as a full time employee and can get away with only 2 days after school so I can afford to be generous. It only works because we can afford for me to earn nothing some weeks as long as there's something coming in
