It is unconcerned by people (happy to be picked up) or dogs and wanders around doing what dogs do with very little interaction. I bought some second-hand patio tiles from a neighbour whose windows overlook our garden. She said, "Oh yes, you have the black dog that sits next to you when you're gardening. Next door to the house with the white dog that keeps getting out. It was in the Forest Park last week and a lady brought it back and we told her "That's Princess, it lives there", then we found it out in the road again the next day and took it back." And then she added, "If we were the kind of people to keep a dog and sell it on... but luckily we're not"

Floss was a bit unsure how to behave to begin with and I was worried she would allow this feisty but very sweet pup to dominate her. That didn't last long! She has learned that a loud bark and even a bit of chasing away is enough to put Lottie in her place, and they've played some really nice games together. I'd forgotten how time consuming a very young puppy is though

Thank you for your honesty. It's reassuring for those of us who have 'works in progress' to hear the lows as well as the highs. Ernie chased a cat yesterday - our neighbours cat who he really, really wants to play with - and then later on the same walk ran off with a man walking a spaniel who he regards as a friend. Every time I am congratulating myself on how far we've come Ernie reminds me how far we still have to go. LD - it's lovely that Floss and Lottie get on OK. It'll be good for Lottie to learn her place A family I work with have just got 2 puppies - >b>two!!!!!!

The other night he woke me up at 2.30 by taking a book off the bookcase and running off with it. There's a puppy class just before our obedience class. I try and get there early so I can watch them coming out . The though of trying to cope with two actually living with me though...!

However, I think we are in another growing up phase. When he was doing lots of biting as a pup I made the decision to give him a ball to save my skin, it was something I really didn't want to do but it was the lesser of two evils. He has been ball obsessed ever since to the point where I have to take a spare ball on a walk as I would not survive in tact if he losses one and I'm not minimising the personal survival needs here!! This is only when he is off lead round the farm and I take it away at all other times. I've not been happy with this outcome but it is what it is, however, I think we may be growing out of the obsession as he has discovered rabbits! I'm know some dog trainers say that one's dog should be fully focussed on the handler at all times but I don't agree so I'm more than happy that he can enjoy a walk doing doggie things. For the last week or so he has been prepared to do at least part of a walk sans ball but he knows where he left it, is prepared to accept that "I haven't got it" and picks it up on the way back. I'm relieved that I haven't created a ball obsessed monster that I feared. However I have created a wet house as he is in and out of his paddling pool in this hot weather!

Jess was insane about balls. Then it all stopped... And now it's sticks. She frantically searches for one when we're out - but you have to look like you want her wretched prize(s) or she sulks.
