J2R that's an impressive time just 6 months on. Good luck this weekend

What rhb said, that's great work after a heart attack.

Cost of 3 pairs of shoes there rhb so don't blame you for looking for cheaper options.

Didn't go sub-18 in my 5K in the end, as took it all far too easy in the end (a perhaps natural caution). Ended up running 18:38 with my heart rate not climbing above 153. Kicked myself afterwards for not going with the original plan of taking the brakes off. Still don't really know why I didn't, but probably it was fear in the back of my mind.

Wish I could run sub-19 at easy pace :-)

Maybe you'll find you can build up gradually J2R, but I wouldn't want to second-guess the risk/reward tradeoff for you.

Easy is relative here, jda. Not easy as in jogging along, humming to myself - I was still putting a fair bit of effort in. But maybe 90-95% max effort rather than 100%.

16:50.50 run for 5000 today. Race had pace lights on 16:15, 16:27 and 16:52 pace. Wanted to go at 16:27 pace. At two laps in I surged to go across to the lead group which was pretty big at the time as didn't want to lead a chase in the wind. In terms of pace, it seems I started losing it after 2000, which is when the group started breaking up I believe.

This is my third year in a row of doing the UoB Winter 5000 and this is my fastest one and first under 17. It's also my fourth fastest 5000 ever. I think track 5000s are hard early season, mid season I'll have done 8s, 15s and 3s so 5 pace will feel slow by the time I race one. Hopefully bodes well for the relays in a couple of weeks and track season later.

Still got a superspike boost to come as well as I wore standard spikes today. I've not raced in superspikes yet so given this was a race with the relays in mind, I wanted to know where I was without the effect of spikes muddying the picture.

Pace lights, as I couldn't stick with the first two during the tough part of the race, they weren't much help. The 16:52 pace light coming past my with 700 to go was a motivator though to keep a solid pace rather than relax too much and wait for the last lap.

On provisional results, I equalled my course PB at the National Road relay yesterday by running 17:29 for 3.16 miles. I was last leg and in the mass start so was able to race which helped, but it was also a very windy day so pleased with the performance. When I ran 17:29 in 2019 (I had a racy leg 2 at the masters that year too where I made up 11 places), I ran my PB of 16:26 for 5000 later in the year. Hopefully I'll be able to break that this year based on this.

Those that know the course will appreciate the pacing here.

At the Midlands relays, I ran a disappointing 18:05. Sub 18 should have been the minimum really even if it was a pretty lonely leg. I've not run as well as I thought I should at the relays the last couple of years so nice to have a good performance here again.
