The 1 - 9 - 17 - 20 was a bit of a weird progression tbh. I remember spending a long run trying to work out other patterns and thought a 1 - 3 - 6 - 10 - 15 - 21 would be quite neat, giving greater returns each time for watering the same plants.

1 - 9 - 17 - 20 is +8 every time, until 20 is reached.

Maybe it should be some other progression than +2. Something that gives you a chance of getting to 20, like your one, Synge, or perhaps +4 or +5. Then you could (just) get a flower to 20 points in 5 or 6 weeks before it died.

...and then +3 would give you a chance of watering a flower to 20 points: 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20.

Is randomness a necessity? If it's been one day since planting the flower, could its value be increased by one? Something like the table below?

1-2 days: nudged by one.
3-4 days: nudged by two.
5-6 days: nudged by three.
7-8 days: nudged by four.
9-10 days: nudged by five.
11-12 days: nudged by six.
13-14 days: nudged by seven.
15-16 days: nudged by eight.
17-18 days: nudged by nine.
19-20 days: nudged by ten.
(Maybe a cap, maybe not?)

Visiting every day gives the progression: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13... With 19 days for it to peak.
Visiting every two days gives: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ... With 38 days for it to peak.
Visiting every three days gives: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20. With 30 days for it to peak.
Visiting every four days gives: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20. 40 days for it to peak.

It's better to repeat on an odd number of days, but at least it's predictable.

Going every three days is better than going every two days, but not as good as doing an extra day between. So going one day after, and two days after, nets an increase of 3. The same with going two days after, and then one day after that. Going every day would also increase it by 3. Going every three days increases it by 2.

(Of course using decimals can remove this discrepancy if the nudging is based on number of days since last visit / 2.)

For someone going every week day and not on the weekend:
Monday planting the flower. +1 (Tuesday), +1, +1, +1 (Friday), +2 (Monday being three days after Friday), +2, +1, +1, +1 (Friday), +2 (Monday), +1, etc.

For someone going every weekend day:
Saturday planting the flower. +1 (Sunday), +3 (Saturday), +1 (Sunday), +3 (Saturday), +1 (Sunday).

For someone going once a week:
Planting on Monday. +4 (Monday), +4 (Monday).

For someone going once a fortnight:
Planting on Monday. +7 (14 days later)

For people who like primes, they might be able to time there activities.
Planting on Monday. +1 (=2) on Tuesday/Wednesday, +1(=3) on the day after that, +2(=5) 3-4 days after that, +2 (=7) 3-4 days after that.

Or even fibonacci, and other sequences. :-)

I liked the old days when you could round up your bugs before marching them out of town (your circle).

1) The scoreboard and markers don't 'reset' on the first of the month any more. They work on a rolling 30 day system.
