Another question: although I used to play this game a lot back when it first came out, I never had the pleasure of close neighbours. Now it would seem, bearing in mind bug distribution, I share almost the same space with another Fetchie. So - traffic lights. Where do they come from - he has 8 not too far from my front door. Do they stay for ever getting higher and higher rent or does everything rest at the beginning of the month as it used to do (except flowers). Resetting would be good as I also have hundreds of penalties from infected bugs!

VJ, everything, except flowers, has a life span of 30 days.

nothing resets on the first of the month anymore - all scores are on a rolling month. Some markers have different life spans - unclaimed jewels only last 7 days (I think).

I also think unclaimed relays and traffic lights expire after 7 days, but last up to 30 days if they are claimed.
Different people have different strategies because of different circumstances - I sometimes have no neighbours, so don't get traffic lights, for instance - but I try to keep on top of my bugs. I find I can get almost as many points from squishing one bug every day as I can from anything else.
Good luck!

Two strategies to get back to a zero score:

1) leave and rejoin the game

2) tidy up your bugs, and play the game for a week or so. Your negative scores will drop off the end of the 30 day period, being replaced one at a time by positive scores.

To my mind, the latter is the more satisfying, plus if you can get ownership of some lights, flowers etc, you'll score quicker than if you just reset.

I must admit that I did (1). I had registered ages ago and never taken the trouble to work out how the game worked, as it all seemed very complex with so many types of symbol and scoring. I looked at it properly in the Autumn, as several WSW players were referencing it, and decided to reset to get rid of a 3000-point negative score based on bug penalties.

Now enjoying the challenge of trying to stay in the Top 100.

Following strategy 1 above, you'll (probably) end up with a 200 point bonus on the morning after rejoining ;-)

I left when I had a lot going on, wasn't getting out much and the increasingly negative score was causing stress beyond it's importance.
I'm thinking about rejoining, but am wary of getting too concerned about it all again. After all, it's only a game

I have also spent a couple of months "curating" my patch and marking any bugs that are not reachable as "inaccessible" as quickly as possible after they appear, usually on the same day. I sometimes have to do this several times until they regenerate within reach of a road or footpath. This means that my negative bug scores are at least down to my route/running choices and not a source of frustration.

HB: +1 for "After all, it's only a game".

It's a nice game though :-)

In my current situation (no running or cycling, just walking) the game gives me a bit of purpose to my walks, rather than walking just for the sake of it. Plus, although I already knew part of Cambridge reasonably well, the game has encouraged me to explore the area even more (possibly the intention of the game?) and has led me to discovering lots of alley ways and back streets leading to otherwise hidden little oases :-)

1) The scoreboard and markers don't 'reset' on the first of the month any more. They work on a rolling 30 day system.
2) You only need to worry about red bugs.
