This requires a good soak in a releasing agent, then bolting the bb tool to the square spline so it didn't shift. Couldn't get my wrench inside an extending pole for leverage so tried a few firm whacks with a large "persuader". Still no joy. In the end placed the frame (no wheels on) in the lawn, upright. Held onto the frame and stood with one foot on the wrench to put most of my 75kg into the wrench; a couple of bounces and it eventually moved. Fun indeed! It was the bolting the tool to the spline that was the really important bit. Annoyingly the threads inside the square taper are fine pitch and I could only find normal pitch bolts in the garage, but with a bit of brute force I managed to screw one in tight enough for it to hold. Ok whilst I knew I was chucking out the bb anyway. |

I recognise that scenario. I put the frame on a well-padded massage bed and then knelt on it, while my neighbour held the head and seatpost. I used my long torque wrench and just managed to shift it. I replaced it with a Shimano hollowtech one, I don't subscribe to square taper BBs although I know a lot of people use them with FSA kit.

I was tempted to go with a HT one but that would have been new cranks too and I only really needed to do big chain ring, chain and cassette. Actually cassette X2 as we use the bike on a turbo so have a spare wheel with a turbo tyre on it. Another £50+ on a crankset didn't seem greatly needed and at least I know I've got all the tools for square taper BBs.

That's fair enough. Mine was on a full rebuild so I justified the expense.
