Yeah I remember, great stuff Georgiegirl. Reckon the extra strength will really help. Happy running :-)

Just about to start using Altra Phoenix 3.0. Zero drop and "natural foot" toe box (they look a bit like clown shoes, but at least they are grey and not bright red). However, they are also maximal cushioned with what looks like good grip for a trail. Elements of minimalist, so this could be a kind of gateway drug as far as minimalist footwear is concerned.

I think 'maximal cushioned' rules out minimal

I'm getting on well with another "gateway" minimalist shoe, the Merrell all out crush, trail shoes. 198g, so definitely light, some cushioning but if you jump on a pebble you feel it, 6mm drop which is a tasteful amount. They are a wide fit and really comfortable and definitely good in the mud.

Good to know Chrisull, not tried the all out crush before - how is it in terms of arch support? My trail gloves and Vapour gloves seem to have no arch which I like but the Bare Access flex felt like it had a wedge under my arch which felt uncomfortable to me. I like the Altras too groundhog, currently use the Escalante which I find quite well cushioned and the One which feels firm and great for races in my experience.

Might have to try the trail gloves again then - last time I tried them the felt very "hard" underfoot and had too high an arch

Definitely not the same arch support as the bare access. Just did a quick comparison between my 3 pairs of shoes - Adidas AdZero, Inov 8 trail roc 235 and it has the lowest arch of all of them. I have high arches so I don't tend to notice arch support unless there is none, but it is both wide around the toe box and narrow around the arch, so that's why I hadn't noticed.

Bad news is one month later they have come away from sole on both feet. So bad that I will be emailing Merrell (with no expectancy of recompense), because this is clearly not good enough.

So Bare Access 5 AND the All out Crush both plagued with this problem (both Merrell), the upper comes away from the sole around the widest part of the foot (and the All out crush is a wide fit)

It's a shame because I really liked the shoe otherwise, I was quite shocked when I looked and saw a two inch hole on both feet in the same place. Where as my inov-8 trail roc 235 18 months in are narrower and show no sign of this. Reason I don't use the Inov-8s much as I ran them too much on the road and wore the sole grip down too much, so they are more road shoes now or undemanding trail.
