Worst wasp sting I had was when I was out running and one got behind the lens of my specs. It's the lingering skin sensitivity afterwards over several days which is nasty too. As for" on going nasty"..I think horse fly bites are nastier because they cause swelling which lasts over several days. |

Being stung by a wasp that flew under my glasses while I was running is the reason I now wear contact lenses. The sting itself wasn't a big deal - it nipped a bit, but I didn't have much of a reaction - but it was unpleasant.

Unfortunately I seem to react to histamine Today's run has been abandoned due to the headache and gastric distress and I have a very hot, red, swollen, itchy arm. It's a choice between double dose antihistamines and staying awake. I'm currently opting for awake - this my change |

I picked up a couple of horsefly bites in mid-June, on the elbow, and my arm was swollen and red for several inches above and below the elbow for more than a week, and there are still small hard lumps where the bites were. Sun block with insect repellent is doing well for me now. I cycled into a wasp on the way to work a couple of years ago and got a sting near the eye - nasty, but nowhere near as bad as the horseflies. |

I came home from Wales with many horsefly bites. They were red and itchy enough, but fortunately I don't seem to be quite as allergic to them as many people are. Biting midgies are another matter. I've come back from trips to remote places in Scotland in a proper mess. |

We've found that anti histamine cream (from Boots) is quite effective on some bites and more so than pills.

I don't use topical antihistamines and antiseptics due to the risk of getting contact dermatitis from the active ingredients or excipients. I had a slightly surreal experience at the weekend when someone in the same group cut her foot on something in the sea and was squealing for "some cream" to put on in. Fortunately someone else had some Savlon so it was possible to stop her squealing.

(I was thinking, "Cream? WTF are you talking about? Why would you want to put cream on it?")

Cream on cuts could perhaps have been folk-medicine related to putting butter on burns? Like the idea of people arguing over which to put on the cut first - jam or cream? Horse flies are bastards. |
