Hartnell's Doctor had more than the one companion but yes, Susan was one of them.

Susan got dropped off and disappeared from story lines, so perhaps it's time to investigate that??? Although he called her his granddaughter it's never really been fully confirmed that she is/was his biological relative. It could be that it was just a precursor for the term 'companion'? She was the first, so a special place is going to be held ;-)

The companions they seem to have recast for the Christmas episode are Ben Jackson and Polly.

I've read that Marshall's agent has denied he's a companion (never said anything about him being cast as the Doctor, which would obviously be much better for his reputation), and that there will be at least two and maybe three companions. And also that Bradley Walsh was much better in Law & Order UK than you'd expect from the rest of his career, so I'm willing to suspend judgment on that rumour.

I'd like to see Susan show up. Never following up on his promise to go and check on her after locking her out and leaving her behind makes the Doctor look bad. Not that Verity Lambert could have predicted how long the series would run & how that line might end up looking half a century on! (And I reckon she's really his granddaughter - don't forget Tennant mentioned being literally a father).

Smith's incarnation seemed to throw things a bit with his reiteration of Tennant's Doctor's statement that he'd know if there were another Timelord (and, presumably, Timelady) still around. Though Susan could be throwing the same masking trick as The Master did ~ and after the fact Capaldi couldn't spot Missy ... Smith's Doctor didn't spot River; hough it could be argued that as a child of human parents but probably doesn't count even if she can/could regenerate. The same goes for Jenny in The Doctor's Daughter ~ but at least she's part Gallifreyan ;-)

And then, of course, there's the Chameleon Watch ~ Susan could have fled and hid ;-)

And after resurrecting Alpha Centuri for the last series and going to the lengths of hiring the actress who originally voiced the part ... Carol Ann Ford is still around and she has previously reprised the role in 1983 and 1993, so perhaps? :-)

I think the Doctor's just plain wrong about that - part of dealing with the guilt of (as he thinks) killing his entire race.

I agree. I think they used it as a plot device in the show's resurrection and ended up regretting it ~ plus we know that it's bubble wrapped in a time lock 'somewhere'. So Nine* and Ten* would believe that they'd killed them all and Eleven* would learn the truth.

* Or if you include John Hurt's War Doctor as Nine then they become Ten, Eleven and Twelve ;-)

I'd like to know how Clara got the TARDIS there in 'Listen'. Presumably it was Gallifrey, any way :-o

And The Master seems to have found a way out after saving everyone in 'End of Time' (iirc?). It took a near eternity for Capaldi's Doctor to break in ... but then, it appears, he escaped quite easily. Seriously, what's up with that?

It'd also be interesting to discover what reincarnation River was on when she saved Smith's Doctor. We know she was born a girl, we know a young girl in the U.S regenerated, we know Rory and Amy had a childhood friend called Mel who turned out to be their daughter, we know that said friend regenerated into River and sacrificed the remainder of her regenerations to save the Doctor. So we know that there were two regenerations and that she sacrificed her ability to regenerate 'again'. So, by my reckoning, there's a big jump from the girl whose regeneration, presumably, happened at about the same time as the moon landings and Mel growing up with Amy and Rory ~ and a little girl being able to get from the US to UK is a bit of a pot hole YMMV (It's odd but then it is a show about a multi millenium old time travelling alien with a penchant for 20th and 21st Century women ;-) )

Only found this thread by accident...
I watched the very first series of Dr Who ..when I was a kid. Subsequent series were ok but not so long ago they began to feel a little bit "adult". Yikes..this was a children's tv programme (maybe family in the day) and all the stuff lately has taken away its charm. It also got far too complicated in my opinion. It was never meant to initiate discussion about politics or gender or anything like that. And hmm...shouldn't a Time LORD be a LADY!?

As with every change in leisure viewing, it's going to take time to rate the new characters, new locations ans new storylines.

Walsh comes across as well rehearsed and professional but lacks a big hitter's CV in drama/TV terms inho.

Hmmm ... (I think I said this before) ... I was sceptical when the series was brought back and Billie Piper was cast as the companion. It turned out to be a good move. I shall watch and see how it pans out :-)
