Solar energy is about 1kw per square meter, cross section of a runner viewed from sun may be about 50cm square and an albedo of 0.5 means they have about 100w or so of extra heat to dissipate on top of the 250 they are already generating. All numbers very approximate but it looks like a significant impact.

They won't need gloves or a buff, that's for sure. Links to BBC coverage for tomorrow if you can't find it on BBC or Red Button:- Women's marathon bbc.co.uk Stadium coverage bbc.co.uk |

Isn’t it just Happy?! Such a lovely guy too. Obviously not elite but such a wonderful demonstration of pace control. He overcooked it in Berlin three years ago, got caught in the storm at Boston two years ago and it all came together this year at London. I share it any time I can, I’m so impressed. |

I think it's mindbogglingly stupid to have a marathon at this time of year in the gulf, even if it is at midnight. It's much easier running after sunset but I can't imagine sub 5 minute miling in 35+ temperatures.

I remember visiting my father in law when he was working in Saudi Arabia 10 years ago and going for crack of dawn runs when the day was at it's coolest (September was when we visited). After being reduced to a puddle after a 45 minute jog, I cannot begin to fathom how brutal it will be for the marathon runners out there.

I’ve seen one assessment where they reckon men’s race will be won in about 2:25 and women’s 2:40. I’d be surprised if someone doesn’t cope better than that, but in the end it’s the same for everyone.
