Chelimo thinks he wouldn't have made it, Letsrun have calculated that he would have easily.

Larkim - yes I realised - just having a rant about UKA in general & their past history of rubbish decision making re qualifying!

If the aim (and implementation!) is genuinely to establish a twin track approach via time *or* ranking then it might work out ok. UKA's policies are another matter...

USA is getting riled up about it as they've always been able to select based on trials and "softer" quali standards - so first three at the trials, and you're going. If the pool of athletes is going to be pre-defined through the higher quali standard plus only those within the rankings parameters, the trials will be something of a moot point unless you've got more than 3 with the quali standard. Arguably the same in the UK too, though our history of olympic selection isn't quite as tied to the trials as it is in the US. |

Well for a long time they have had a strong focus on medals to the exclusion of all else (doing back to 1996 anyway). On that measure their policy has been pretty successful though there have been some pretty harsh decisions. I guess that would be the case even if they spread their net a little wider, there are always going to be people who miss out narrowly.

In just never understand why we don't fill the allocation , people may step up. As I say it has always been this way. |

Money money money (and perhaps a bit of a worry of dilution of resources, eg medical/support etc). Though I do tend to agree with you, the marginal cost of supporting a handful of extra athletes to attend cannot be all that great and the benefits of experience/encouragement are not negligible even when they are unlikely to medal. There is also sometimes significant public interest in the less prominent athletes who may have interesting back stories. Eddie the Eagle and Eric the Eel didn't win much but I don't recall the people who did! |

Agree 100% with Gobi. If we can, we should fill up the allocation. Let's hope when UKA publish their policy they commit to that because let's face it if you are able to qualify under the tough time requirements or based on a decent world ranking you are in the mix in most events. |

Can someone check if this works? Here's a spreadsheet which allows links to the IAAF rankings pages by copying and pasting the URL from the IAAF rankings pages so that you can see where the rankings cut off *might* be for the Olympics. e.g. for the mens 5000m, if the field size is 42 then they would need to place the cut off at *at least* the 70th ranked athlete, which would mean the potential pool of athletes for GBR would be 3 athletes, Kenya 16 athletes, USA 10 athletes, Ethiopia 11 athletes etc. Spreadsheet is docs.google.com All you need to do is select the event and the gender, and then read down the info. Would appreciate someone testing it as I've added some protections in! |
