Looks like there'll be lots of African athletes suddenly acquiring European citizenship. I'm all for high standards but 2:29:30 to qualify for ladies seems unnecessarily harsh - 10% increase?

I think they've shot themselves in the foot. If very few qualifiers & invited athletes arent allowed to go by their federation's it will just be dull as no home interest to support.

Dewi Griffiths has also run sub 2:11 and faster than Hawkins so there are 3 brits in with a shout of the qualifying time

International allegiance switching has been made much harder, so that won’t be an issue. It’s always been 3 athletes per nation, so that won’t change anything either in terms of marathon participation for example. The big change is the reduction in the overall field size for the marathon in particular, but all events are seeing reductions in the field size. The changes to the quali standards are meant to allow fewer athletes through so that they don’t end up exceeding the quota, and then they can top up through the rankings systems. Because they are expecting a 50:50 split between qualification and rankings (it’s probably unfair to call it invitation really) I think the acceptance of places based on rankings will be more or less automatic - that is, unless UKA gets their mits over it and insists on criteria like “athletes who are qualified based on the IAAF rankings will be selected providing there is a realistic expectation of making the top 8” or some other equally stretching criteria. Honestly I think the IAAF stuff is fair enough, it will be UKA’s job to stuff things up!! |

TBH, I think dropping 5000m from the Diamond League is a bigger deal.

UKA criteria is crap- if everyone followed the idea they'd only send someone if they thought they'd be top 8 there'd only be 8 participants- utterly ridiculous. As demonstrated time & time again- if you give people a chance they quite often rise to the occasion & do way better than their initial qualifying time might suggest.

Just to clarify Jovi I was being hypothetical about the UKA criteria. They've not set that yet.
