Predictably enough I can empathise with anyone a few lbs over right now, me too. Normal running weight was always 11st-low, and occasionally down to 10st10. Came back from holiday in June to see 12st11 :-o. Tracking intake and expenditure now to shift some, and making another nice graph in the process.
Slightly connected to the above, I took to wearing a low-end Fitbit earlier this year - attracted by the idea of sleep monitoring predominantly. I've learned two things:
a) I now believe I sleep more on a poor night than I thought I did. Previously I felt like I could wake at 2.30am, and be basically awake for a couple of hours before dropping off again (and I previously tried reading, podcasts, sleep apps, relaxation, breathing to try to get to sleep and felt nothing worked). Got me very frustrated. But now I have data to show that actually, I'm drifting in and out of sleep throughout that time. So I now don't worry so much about it when it's happening - and that probably has the happy effect of making it not so bad too... So it's been worth it for that alone.
b) it has an optical HR, which reads correctly about 80% of the time. But that's not good enough, and I wouldn't be paying decent money for a training watch with optical HR currently (even if I was training).

G - if you'd asked me to guess what your new hobby was going to be, it would have taken me a *very* long time.

12st11?! FFS Paul. I don't think I could get that big! I know you're taller than me, but I don't think I've ever got over 12st?! My racing weight would be same as yours (but for my height that's not quite as extreme as you - I usually still have a bit of bulk on me, not a complete stick!)

Very interesting about sleep monitoring. I wore my VA3 for a bit, but decided I wasn't that bothered about what it thought of my sleep, and I don't like wearing a watch in bed.

Optical HR results are 100% according to some. It must be a watch placement / wrist issue. I've actually just swapped to right arm (did it in gym last night when I was breathing heavily and sweating buckets in a class and it said 98bpm. I thought, "nah, that's not right", swapped to right wrist and it said 130! I'll try on right for a while and see. Was really disappointed in the 10K not to have reliable HR stats, because I wanted to know if the HR said I was working as hard (for a rubbish time!) as I thought I was. But as reported elsewhere I got 140-150 for a while, then a sudden jump to 170-180 which it then held til the end until final sprint and it climbed to max. As larks observed, the 170-180 was suspiciously closely correlated with cadence! :-O I'll see if I can get anything better from swapping over. I really can't be bothered with HR strap.

Chris, I'm not sure what HR recovery is. It tracks the HR dropping after. Is it something about how it stores that, connected to the previous activity in some way? I can't see why it wouldn't. :-) G

Does the Vivo have the ability to setup complicated intervals on Garmin Connect? The 235 will as the 230 does.

I don't do that, but yes, I think both the VA and VA3 can do relatively complex workouts. I just hit lap for each rep that I do, but I'm simple like that. At least, last time I did any intervals, a long time ago, so maybe my memory is failing...?!

The VA isn't great for complex sessions other than manual lapping, though there are some geeky apps that you can install on it to make it beep at the right times etc. Don't know about built in stuff on the VA3 though.

Lap press works on track but beeps are great for time based reps. You can concentrate on running. I have 5 x 10 secs plus 2 x 20 secs session set up for example.

If you don't need it then it doesn't matter of course.

Yes, those are the sorts of sessions I'd struggled with getting installed on my VA, would be nice to have some easier programmable functionality but that seems reserved for the higher end watches.

Yeah the 235 is more "running" geared so has the geekier stuff. Intervals hard here as nowhere flat, so they're on the flat or one section of road near Jamaica Inn.
