So I disagree but this could be the ex ultra distance runner talking.

Running 4hours is easy, no worse for me than a 3hr effort in terms of fatigue.

I guess it depends what you've trained for. If you're training for an ultra a 4 hour marathon, for someone capable of running 3 or better, might be just fine mentally...however having an injury hit build up meaning you're lacking the long runs (both time on feet and distance) I thought maybe the shorter run time at a 'comfortably hard' effort would appeal more to me.

For me the stride isn't comfortable running say 9min/mile when i would normally be running 7's.

If I wanted an easy 4hr mara I would run easy at 8's and take walk breaks. But then I am very one paced and anything slower than LSR pace feels ungainly

This is this whole natural stride thing.

I have paced everything from a 16.xx 5km to a 4hr 20 miles.

My stride is just my stride

I agree Gobi...I was over 10mm today although that was largely down to the blizzard and underfoot conditions.

I've definitely got a lazier stride when running slower, my cadence drops off dramatically unless I really concentrate on keeping it high, and it feels less natural to me.

Don't get me wrong I reckon I could comfortably run a 4hr marathon. Pacing someone, or a group, would make it enjoyable. I just don't think I'd like to run at that pace as if in WW's position. Not for an event I've travelled to and paid to enter.

Spot on Gobi. I think it used to be ego (for me) that got in the way, but I feel 'comfortable' running from 12 minute/mile to 6 minute/mile now (although I can't hold 6 minute/mile for long as I'm not an athlete).

Brunski - my stride gets shorter and cadence stays reasonably ok

Again, spot on, Gobi, that is my findings as well.
