I personally think it may be easier for some to run a 3:15 marathon, than heading out to run a 3:45 marathon. Just the extra time on your feet would make it a far less enjoyable experience for me. Obviously it'd still not feel like a raced effort but a well paced 3:15 for a 2:58 runner

If I'd have carried on my run last Saturday for another 6 miles (legs felt ok) I'd have probably come in around 3:10 - 3:15. Obviously that would have been a bad idea but I think it'd be easier than running at a more leisurely pace for an extra 30 minutes.

Typing it out I'm not sure what I've put makes much sense physiologically, but knowing I was going out to 'jog' round a marathon I think may be tougher mentally (especially over the extra 30 minutes).

Good point B, but think it depends on the individual.Personally I have no issue with jogging along and love that aspect of running whereas you/WW etc might find that a bit tedious. I think its more of a mental thing

Agree with you Brunski, you have to admire the folks that are out there for 5 hrs+, that's just a long time to do anything for, let alone run.

Getting skinny is good Baz, as long you're not getting unwell isn't it just the body getting itself in shape? No point having skinny legs though if you're going to wear big fat shoes! Did you ever make a change?

I think as much as anything it's the thought of watching people who you think you should be running faster than going away from you...even if you later pass them at mile 22-26.

If I was entering a marathon to run for fun, or going just for the spectacle, I'd rather run it with someone else to help pace them to a goal. I could definitely get as much out of seeing them PB, and being a part of that.

Lol WW...agree on getting skinny...its more the speed of it in the last week....lighter every day without really having changed anything. I have a voucher from Christmas for local running shop, need to find time to go in and get some advice and get most suitable lighter weight pair.

Whats normal approach for use of lighter shoes in terms of wearing in, training and racing. i.e. presume use a few times to wear in, use in at least one longer training run then use as racers if no issue, but otherwise they stay in the box apart from at least one use per training cycle ?

I haven't got my marathon shoes out of the box yet (other than checking size), but am wearing their old predecessors for any road races (2 in late Dec) and then again just yesterday for the threshold session. Usually I'd expect to wear the fast shoes about once a week leading up to the marathon.

For me 15mins slower than all out effort was about the right speed.
Enough effort to keep the head engaged but easy enough that the last few miles never got properly hard

I think my most satisfying in-race experience was the 20 miler that I ran last year with 5 at very easy pace, and the last 15 "only" at MP. Had a beautiful mix of cruising past people who were on their limit knowing I was nowhere near mine, but towards the end was still fast enough that, without a real race head mentality in place, I still had to find "something" to make sure that I kept going. Whether I could do a similarly phased 10-easy, then 16 at MP+15ish or so I don't know, but I'd like to think that sort of recipe would make for a reasonably enjoyable day out.

No way Brunski. I can easily churn out 4:10, 4:20, 4:30, etc, etc. A piece of cake.

And pacing it for those times is very satisfying, passing all the people who over estimated their abilities.
