I'm happy enough to rest on my laurels, no real desire to go sub 3. I've had such a good year, but even with the moderate mileage (compared to some on here) there's only so much free time I can nab without the rest of my family getting a bit short-changed!

Having said that, with the reduction in club places at VMLM this year (see another thread) I'm fearful that they'll be tightening up GFA again this year so I might need to knock at least 5 minutes off if they tighten it to 3:10. I'm just guessing on that at this point, but one of the reasons they gave for reducing club places was the number of GFA places getting taken up. So I might need an improvement next year just to be sure!

Might have to drop Martin and Tom a line @ MT. Amusingly enough the last time I got a mention, another bloke from my small town (another serial mention-getter) was also on - we only live about 0.5 mile apart, but we're starting to take over the show ;-)

Larks, the only tightening of GFA since 2009 when I first qualified has been for the under 40 males. Think it was 3, became 3:10 then back to 3:05.

Now being 50 they currently give me an extra 5 mins :-)

On the club v GFA place, that feels about right to me, think they should cater for people that run the qualifying times

Well hello there.... its been over 7700 posts since I was last in here :-) probably as I haven't raced a marathon since London 2015 in 3:22 so its been a while.

But I am planning on running a fast one for my 50th year next year. Currently Edinburgh is booked.

Where I think (but will need to check) my GFA time will be 3:20.

Just had a solid weekend of racing here, with a 1:06:33 for 7.77m off road hilly and muddy trail race. Then today off the back of that a 42:24 at Swindon 10k which bizarrely on the predictor in the trg log says 3:14 for the Mara :-) may be some life in the old dog yet..... but need to be mindful of the body.....

I'm only bitter about the club thing as I was administering the allocation this year for my club, bu as we only have 8 members older than 18 we now miss out on getting any places. ANd I had a cunning plan to try to run with my eldest in 2019 when (hopefully) my GFA comes good and he has a solid chance of picking up the club's allocated place as there's only 1 other long distance runner in the club!

The conversion thing again! Well done larks on half PB. Great time. I just urge caution on marathon target progress. 5 mins at a time? 3.14 to 2.59 is quite a big jump. Unless you've done the 3.14 VERY easy! 1.25/6 to 3.0x is a good conversion, not easy and not a given. Rember Bazo (and me perhaps and older runners and girls etc) convert well. Most blokes do quick 10k and half and don't do so well in mara. Imho.

Paul a, amazing, 52 in 52. Wow!

Lovely new runs in my new locale. XC next weekend. :-) G

Well done Larks and Paul 👍👍

Managed a bang on 38:00 for a 10k today. A little way from a PB but nice to be getting closer after some injuries.

Can't wait to get going on my mara training now, going to to go fairly easy for next 5 weeks and just try and get the miles up before cracking on 1st week in Jan.

Baz - I was referring to this calculator where 1:26 predicts 3:10 for men.

Fetch has 2 calculators. This one suggested 2:59 for a 1:26

I think the one you refer to is based upon actual data fetch has accumulated while the one I linked to is based on the riegel formula. In reality I think the correct answer is somewhere in between the 2

Baz - yes that's the point, the accumulated data says conversion is a lot better than most.

2:59 off 1:26 feels tough. Obviously you have a faster peak HM though.
