By coincidence I installed that app about a week ago after coming across the DCR article. Kudos to Paul the Builder!
Just used it on an 18 km training run this morning, and it's a convenient screen for all the common metrics, without even thinking about using it for pacing to distance markers in a race.

In my marathon last October I was aware that the GPS distance would likely be less than the course distance. I wrote my split times (for my goal finish time) on my arm, and I thought that I'd be able to tell if I was on pace or not, and compensate for the difference with the watch lap pace. Worked out fine, but this app may help make it all easier...

Absolutely DMZ. Manual approaches are also available! But an app is always fun! My manual method was just incorporating 5-10s cushion into every mile (beyond the first 3 where I always start slow) so instead of a 6:52 target, I was always just looking for each mile to be around 6:4x, so a high 6:5x was a worry and a low 6:3x similarly. I also had my 5K, 10K, half mara and 20 mile targets scribbled on a wrist band. All worked out fine. :-) G

Yeah, I was aiming for sub-3 hours, and on the spreadsheet that is 4:16/km. I thought that probably 4:14/km (according to the GPS) would work, but during the race I realised even that was too slow and ended up doing a negative split with an average of 4:12/km on the watch.

On the app I like how the HR number seems to change colour depending on the HR zone you're in.

This does assume the markers are actually correct though doesn't it? I can't think of many(any?) races in Cornwall where the markers are correct. Even the race my club organises, the Cornish marathon, one year the 20 mile marker has drifted 800m up the road from where it was meant to be...

Even if you leave autolap on it is helpful in calcing the prediction based on current actual pace. So you got to this point at X;XX per mile, but if you keep on at the current speed you'll reach the goal distance by X;XX.

It's a good screen of data in any event I think, though I'd need to refamiliarise myself with the layout as I found myself a little confused at times this morning trying it out.

Ive used PtBs manual lapping approach in races where the markers are out. It does still work overall but needs tme to sort itself out. For example in the Edin Mara one year the mile 1 marker was at c1.25 miles and I was way out, but by abour 3 or 4 it was in synce, but I clearly then didn't trust where I actually was. Hence why I only now use it at London

So in a five mile race say , with a couple of inaccurate mile markers, it might not sort itself out in time... (I was faced with exactly this)

Surely in a 5 mile race it's just eyeballs out anyway, you don't really have time to adjust your pace by a few secs per mile as you do in a marathon ;-)

Or just use the app in non-manual mode, where obviously you lose the benefit of the "real" pace.

The app (strictly, data field) is good - its limitation is race organisers!

K5 - hills. It's basically a question of how hard do you take the hill, in the fast one round here. I thought I'd taken the hill fast and Garmin and the mile marker concurred, and so I didn't push any harder, and then I found later on they'd both bolloxed it up to the tune of 30 seconds. I'm not sure I had an extra 30 seconds in me... but you never know.
