Can you add me in on the sidebar for Berlin. Starting to get back to former fitness but still having a crisis of confidence about the sub 3:15 given my advancing years (Berline will be my first race in my new age category!) but will be giving it a go. Didn't manage a long run at the weekend as just too hot. Been doing lots of 10Km runs though so hoping once I commence my long runs won't have lost too much long run fitness. I have a very hilly road half marathon in a couple of weeks which should give me a pointer as to where I'm at fitness wise!

OMG! DC Rainmaker (the internet's premier reviewer of Garmin, Suunto and all other sport tech geekery) has recommended a Garmin IQ app called Race Screen, that basically is Paul The Builder's patented (shame it wasn't you could have made some money!?) manual lap for safe race pacing technique! dcrainmaker.com Technology catches up with intelligence (how many years ago did you invent this technique paul?!) Being a technophobe I've just got to work out how to actually install it!

I tried to use this data field for my HM race in January but I had some issues with the average pace which seemed screwy. I reviewed it via the Garmin website, and the developer replied (though I hadn't spotted it until today!) with a solution to the issue I was seeing, so I'll try it out again at some point.

Cool, let us know how you get on. I'm going to download it later and give it a go. Love a free app! Good luck with Berlin Jovi. It's on my bucket list! G

Looked into that HG and thought it was just as easy to manual lap.

I will stick with the PtB patented approach as it works for me when I use it (i.e. at london when I can trust accuracy of mile markers) On another note: 1) PtB were you running in Edinburgh on Mon morning 2) was there some kind of wacky race on? I ran to work c7am and near balgreen school I was running behind 2 guys with weird addidas bibs on that looked like some kind of footballers GPS thing. They turned right at saughton park and I went straight on before turning right. At Chesser on the other side of road but coming towards me was a guy who looked very like PtB wearing one of these vests and he waved to me. When I crossed the road further up I saw the 2 original guys emerge and then start to run along past Gorgie |

I'd noticed that PtB had not logged any training for almost 2 weeks now, assumed he was off on holiday - maybe to Edinburgh !! You'd have to be sure the mile markers were in the right place for that app ( or the PtB manual lapping method ) to be of any use. Obviously they are spot on at London and other marathon majors, but I wouldn't necessarily trust them any more than the GPS at other races ( and non of my races involve skyscrapers or tunnels or so many people I have to weave about) |
