Sorry to hear that SM6 - I saw the time on I'm sure that one day you'll nail a marathon and then be able to knock them out for fun |

can I comment on FF's question, please? I think most of us do our long runs without too much help in the way of gels etc. However, when it comes to the day aren't we all looking for as much help as we can get out there? There are loads of different types of gels out there, I'd simply suggest having a go with as many brands as you can in the hope that you'll find something that suits. I'm fortunate (or trained?) that I can take pretty much anything but I am still a bit careful with the caffeinated ones. High 5s are my gel of choice - I can't say that they are nice but they are thin enough to be tolerable. I'd really urge you to give it a go. Good luck! |

Thanks WW, I agree about looking for as much help as we can get. I have used a high 5 gel that was a 'race give away' in training (no negative affects) but would 'prefer' a water, sports drink approach, if it's possible, to run a marathon that way and wanted to know how other more experienced runners approached fueling.

FF, I have run marathons without gels, sure it's possible. And, it's possible to replicate the kcal intake of a gel from drinking Lucozade or something similar. I find that really does me in though, not just in the race but for days after. So for me the underlying question would be if you can tolerate gels then why not? |

I did my first marathon on just sports drinks, but that was London where they give plenty out, although I was feeling pretty queasy by the end. Next couple of races used gels with no ill effects at all, but in my last marathon the gels (same brand) made me feel pretty sick so I’ve had mixed experiences. The obvious advantage of gels is that you can carry them with you, and they are easier to practice with than drinks. As well the brand it is also essential to practice taking them at race pace as that what I believe caused me trouble last time as I was trying to run a bit quicker than before. |

Uyuni - you'll have far fewer problems next time given the fact that you'll be out there for *much* less time

and FF - it look like you have a serious correction of your marathon time coming up too looking at your shorter pbs / mileage / current mara PB. Nice!
