Fenners - in my defence I did say 'pretty much'! It may be cheating but it's far better to complete it like that than to attempt 14 in one go and not pull it off, that's for sure. In my experience the easy mile in between gives you a rest mentally more than it does physically. I've done this kind of session a few times recently and found that the E mile in the middle comes in only 15 -30s slower than the MP section as it just feels so easy by comparison. In my case that means that I'm running 15 miles at 6:47 rather than 14 miles at 6:45. Not so much of a difference, really.

I think that the confidence boost of the session is perhaps the most important element of it. After all, if we can't run 14 at MP pretty easily then we are doomed come the day when we expect to run 26.2.

CW - didn't you feel good when you broke up the long LT session? Same principle just not as extreme!

Sincerely hope that you get the 14 done at target pace. Perhaps what I was trying to do was to demonstrate that someone who has run the times you are targeting has also struggled with the mental aspect of running 14 MP, solo, untapered, adopted a different approach and ultimately done OK. Good luck - Ill go back to the 3:15 thread to debate bloody bridges or something!

I do think breaking up runs can be surprising in terms of pace. I did 4 x 1200m with 3 min recoveries mid week and Fetch's "benchmark" reported that I'd run a 20:16 5k in the middle. I've often wondered if I try to run a parkrun in that sort of fartlek mentality how far off I might be from a decent time - probably not much.

Week three of FIRST complete, yesterday 4 x 1 mile intervals. Each interval marginally faster than the previous one.

Feeling strong and powerful, just did one of my best static bike session, no niggles.

Good work - 1 mile is a long interval mentally.
