What are our thoughts on stretching? I am a 1972 model and have the flexibility of a house brick. I only stretch on the odd occasion that something hurts and I keep it up until it doesn't and then I stop...

I was wondering if a targeted daily effort - hips, hamstrings, back, of say 2x10-15 minutes for about 3 months i.e. until the next marathon would make a difference. It seems that it would be an 'easy' way to make a difference to time as 2-3% improvement would be 4-6 minutes without changing anything else?

I think that's the logic behind the "Kinetic Revolution" 30 day programme - kinetic-revolution.com

I've never managed to stick it out beyond a week or so - if people think long runs are boring, for me 10 minutes of stretching exceeds my attention span!!

I do try to remember to do 3 x 10s calf stretches in the shower in the morning (my calf is the only muscle I've ever actually torn), but I probably only have a 50% hit rate with that.

I find his voice soporific - but I am sure it is good stuff. Not seen this, so will have a dive in.

I think it makes a huge difference. I started almost daily yoga a couple of years ago and I think it made a real difference to strength, flexibility and resilience. It was the year I set marathon, HM, and 100 mile PBs. I've since got lazy and now do the odd session - I can really feel how worse I am for not doing it.

Agree Oscar, he's not quite the most compelling. But he does put out useful stuff, and I did quite like the concept of a 30 day programme with some variety. Perhaps I'll have to give it another go in my build up to marathon #1.

I seem to remember quite enjoying the "spelling the alphabet with my feet" mobility exercise.

Thanks Larks, just done day 1. The proprioception stuff (including the alphabet) was reassuringly easy. The mobility stuff on the other hand...
