DMZ, unfortunately, YES!!! I have seen before many marathons and Ultras people popping NSAIDs.

I suppose it depends on your tolerance for them taking them to address a specific issue (e.gh. blinding headache on the start line, or bruised foot for example) vs taking them to dull the pain of the effort they are about to undertake. Or somewhere in between.

I must admit I've had a paracetamol and ibuprofen dose on the start line (from 2011 in my first half) as I'd picked up an odd pain in the week before the race and didn't want it to get out of hand. A wiser me might not have started, but I got round and don't think I cheated anyone in the process. Had I (laughably!) taken a narrow victory on the line I might have had a crisis of conscience, but given I finished about 250th, I doubt those finishing around me could give two hoots about the fact I had taken ibuprofen an hour and a half earlier.

I've been offered pain killers but always said no. But I'm not evangelical about it. As flanker suggested it's not a nanny state everybody should have the freedom to make their own choices with respect to legal substances.

That's interesting. The only thing I heard about (other than caffeine) is people taking loperamide before a marathon to avoid needing a dump during the race! I actuallly considered this before my marathon, but chanced it in the end (and I was fine!)

FR, I am with you I would not take painkillers, anti inflammatories (or immodium) before a race. In fact I try to limit my use of these to only when absolutely necessary.

My rationale being that something hurts for a reason and if I need to take a tablet before then I am just making it worse and shouldn't be running.

Re caffeine - that must have changed then as it definitely was banned

Baz, I'm actually like you, I hardly ever take any form of painkiller at all as I like to be able to understand what the pain is telling me and manage it accordingly. The only time I would consider it would be on a major 'A' race, where I'm prepared to take the risk of a longer-term injury for a result. I've always had a couple of paracetamol and a couple of ibuprofen in my pack for 100 milers, just in case. At that low dosage the risk of the potentially very dangerous side affects is v low, and I'd only take them if I knew my body was well fed and hydrated.

I've never taken immodium for a race, and never will. Horrible stuff. I'd rather nip into the woods!!

They're looking at caffeine again as they are getting concerned that it is ramping up in use so it's on the radar again. Cyclists are worried that their Cappuccino stops with cakes will have to be a thing of the past ;-)

Now if they made cake a banned substance (it definitely picks me up) then I'd have to look for a different pastime.
