Now the penny pincher in me comes out - anyone tried the Wiggle own brand ones? £9.99 for 20 including the caffienated ones seems much better value for what is essentially a bit of sugary liquid in a pouch than some of the major brand ones? As for shorts with pockets, that would require an additional investment in new shorts, and that would be just a step too far ! |

SiS are far and away the best gels and are always discounted, often by 50%. The SiS gel belt works well, although I'm now a shorts with pockets man.

No offence here Larkim Take as many gels as you like. It's about experimenting in training to see what works. |

Gels are the spawn of the devil and should be taken sparingly

I got through my last marathon on no gels, and hope to do the same with this one. I ate chocolate flapjacks instead, one an hour (best taken with water!)

I actually enjoy the SiS gels, especially orange and cherry ones. Although I'd argue that Gu's are even better. |

Do you have a local running or sports shop that sells individual gels, larkim? Or local running friends who might let you try one from their stash? Might be better to try two or three brands, in case you don't get on with one but like another, before you buy a 20-pack? |

I've tried a few brands in the past and none of them have given me any issues so I've pushed boat out and ordered some of the wiggle ones - at 50p each there's not too much waste happening. I noticed the wiggle ones only have about half the amount of caffiene compared to SIS caffienated ones, so might try those with a pro plus pill for the same effect! Anyway, they'll arrive next week, so will do go for a three gel experience on the long run next Sunday and see what happens. |

That all sounds good, I have never tried the wiggle brand ones so I'd be curious as to how you find them - they do seem good value. You may have noticed that SIS do various flavours standard strength caffeine, and then "double espresso" double-strength, which I think they say you should only have one per hour, and two max per day... Has anyone taken more caffeine gels than the recommended amount per hour? I guess if you get too buzzy then it might negatively affect your performance. |
