Asking for a friend...

First marathon on the radar for 20yo who has recent times of 16:22 5k and 58:59 10m (also ran 2:09 for a 20m race where he faded towards the end), HM bests date back nearly 2 years of 1:19.

Current mileage is around 50mpw, sometimes a bit less, and is busy racing XC and long-ish fell races because that's what he enjoys, plus weekly track sessions and tempo sessions.

He's got London in his sights for next year.

Ball park has got to be in the 2:40-2:50 range, potentially faster, potentially slower. And of course there's no need for him to race a marathon at that age, but he wants to do it so that's a discussion off the table.

What sort of marathon specific schedule would you be looking to point towards? He's already got decent speed, so based on the 20m race I'd guess focus on endurance is the obvious way. Any specific approaches beyond reading / applying P&D or JD that are most beneficial at your sort of level, or for youth. I'm going to guess there are common traits that apply for 3:15 / 47 year olds just as much as 2:45 / 20 year olds, but if there is any helpful advice out there I'd love to be able to pass it on to him!

Plenty marathon specific pace sessions in the lead into the marathon. If he is running up to 50 miles a week and that is all he can manage due to commitments elsewhere, then I'd suggest he gets some efforts into his long runs. And those long runs need to be getting close to race distance towards the peak of his training, prior to taper. If he can slot in up to 14-15 miles at marathon pace/effort in his 22-25 mile long runs, that should cause the adaptions that he will need. Obviously, he will need to build to these levels. He looks like he has great speed so it is definitely the endurance he needs to work on. He could leave in the track and tempo session during the week fine too. Having said all that there are plenty of approaches and he may have to play around with how he structures his training. It really can be an individual thing. He is young, so he has plenty of time to make all the training mistakes we've all made!! :)

50mpw is enough if he turns out to have a decent aptitude for it, but only time will tell for that. I find JD with 2 quality sessions to be convenient and flexible and it does include some hard running in the long run which I agree with Boab is probably quite important.

I struggle with questions like this, but its hard to answer. Everyone is so different.

My mate ran sub 2.30 off 50 a week, but it hurt and he also runs sub 15 for 5k.

Hello Boab, all good?

Thanks James - I appreciate that a quick question really doesn't necessarily deserve a straightforward answer! Speaking with the runner last night, his ambitions are limited and he fears stepping up volume significantly now would a) be a struggle to fit in and b) tip him above the threshold where injury might happen - he recognises the need to develop this more gradually.

Having said that, the JD training paces derived from his 10m PB and which link to a 2:44 outcome are not at all daunting. So I guess 2Q, concentrating on delivering the easy run mileage at the easy run pace and generally taking care of himself up to London will be a decent enough experience to see what he can get out of the sausage machine at the other end.

After a while off, trying to get back etc, no racing for a while, getting back cheers. Just building up myself, avoiding my kids with colds, normal stuff. :)

Guy I know locally, Paul Mingay, very nearly made it into your select company last weekend, with a time of 2:45:14 - at the age of 62! New British over-60 record.
