Happy G - I am part of a countryside volunteer group - enjoy spending a few days a week out in the cold and rain, being pestered by irritable wasps and getting the opportunity to use rather dangerous tools that I wouldn't be allowed anywhere near to at home. I don't begrudge the thousands of people who then benefit from being able to access or make use of an area in a way that would not have been possible without teams of volunteers.

Hmmm, good analogy Kev. I benefit from the path maintenance that is done by our hills / countryside volunteer groups. I know quite a few of them and have contributed funds and sponsorship, but you're right, I've never volunteered. Not *quite* the same as parkrun volunteering, but I see what you are saying. :-) G

I must admit to not volunteering as much as I used to - that 100 was in my sights for a long time. Himself & I were part of the original core team at Boston so I did most of my hi-vising back then. I now figure that if I turn up to run, then they get him as a volunteer so they would be looking for one more marshal if I wasn't running! Saying that, I looked at my number of volunteers v runs yesterday and I still come in at around 1 in 4. (should I be putting that on the blow my own trumpet thread instead ;-) )

Lol mindardi. I think you're all good. 1 in 4? Brilliant! And I've never been core team because I'm too lazy/flighty to make the commitment, so I'm poor compared to the cores. Well done all The Core Teamers! :-) G

Floods permitting, I’ll finally be volunteering for the 25th time on Saturday. It’s well overdue!

Friendly, helpful volunteers at Prudhoe, waiting for the penultimate participant to finish and supporting him on his way...;)

I was even offered a cup cake in the last half mile by the 11-y-o junior female who'd logged 100 parkruns the same day.

"And while it is unfair to expect a core team to do every role every weekend..." I think of our core team as just the RDs and ED, so it's clearly impossible for us to cover everything as there are only four of us.

On another note: we started with a team of three RDs in September 2012. The same three are still RDs, plus another who came on board a year or so afterwards (and we did have one more but she moved away). Wondering if that's unusual - is there more RD churn at other parkruns? I suppose at some point I might not want to do it but so far that's not a thought I've entertained.

We are fortunate that we rarely have a problem with volunteer numbers, so of my 37 volunteer stints 23 have been as a pacer to put against my 203 runs. We have about 40 Beeston AC runners who parkrun regularly, and 5 of the 6 RD's are club members, so they know that if there is a problem then there are a large number of runners who will help out at the last minute.

Our core team is 8, all who RD. We were 9, one left (and we replaced with a very enthusiastic regular) and one moved away and wasn't replaced as we thought 8 is still plenty. That's our only changes in 1.5 years.

As well as the core team we have a strong community. We have 6 others who are V25, 22 who have volunteered 10-24 times and 40 3-9 times.
