we had 600 plus on NYD and are back to about 250. A neighbouring run has been consistently over 500 all year though for reasons unknown

I have previously jokingly proposed that there should be a separate parkwalk at 10am, then the walkers could volunteer for the runners and the runners could volunteer for the walking event, solving the lack of volunteers problem.

I think my own issue (& I do realise I;m in the minority here) is that what I felt I signed up for way back when was a running event - to partake and also volunteer at. I didn't siogn up for a touchy feely letsmake the world a better place event. As things move on and more of the walking end come on board I think the ethos will move further and further away from running.

As others have said, maybe another "rival" event may spring up for runners.

But Jovi does the evidence / data support your position that you are now volunteering at an event that is materially different because of the impact of walkers? I 100% get the frustration at HQ and some of their messages - but are you and your team actually having to hang around longer today than they were 2, 3, 4 5 years ago?

This took some time to catch up as there was a lot to read but my own view is simple

With the exception of race walkers who basically are running but with a silly action I have an issue with all walkers. 40 or 140 mins.

It was about running when it started and to me should be about running now.

Gobi - I agree. I'm all for running at whatever pace but there is a pace when it becomes a walk and not a run. I think officially UKA defines (or certainly used to) at 13 minutes a mile. That is what used to be used as the sweeper/cut off in road races.

I'm definitely hanging around longer than I was. Back in 2013 a friend walked round on crutches when recovering from surgery - he only took 40 minutes! We regularly get people well over that. I really don't want to discourage those who start out in excess of 40-50 minutes as very often they move onwards and upwards to quicker than walking pace but IMO parkrun should be a run and there shouldn't be any encouragement of coming along "just for a walk". If we hadn't encouraged the 50 mins plus people to get stronger and try running they'd never have got fitter and stronger. I'm not one for confirming people in their bad habits rather encouraging them to change - bit old fashioned I suppose nowadays to call a spade a spade! There are plenty of walking groups if all you want to do is have a stroll to get a bit less couch potatoey.

Unfortunately JV and Gobi, you are at odds with parkrun HQ's messages. "Whether running, jogging, walking or volunteering..." is the strapline now. Not saying I agree with this direction, but that's the organisation that you working with. :-) G

Not sure if I mentioned this before. One of our local event locations has a Nordic Walking group that used to take place at the same time as parkrun. Knowing that the wife of one of the regular parkrun walkers took part in the WM group I asked why he did parkrun and didn't walk with the NW group. Apparently they were too quick for him.
