Travelling up to pick up son from Uni in about 10 days time on parkrunday. I'll be travelling solo to make space in the car, so I'm free to pick a parkrun en route. So we're talking Cheshire, either up M6 as far as Carlisle and across to Newcastle, or M56 / M62 to Leeds and up A1M. Close options which don't appear involve too much motorway deviation therefore appear to be:- Oakwell Hall Pontefract (already done that) Wetherby Caterrick Sedgefield Durham (emotional appeal, my alma mater) Riverside (Chester-le-street) Gateshead Windy Nook Newcastle Carlisle Prudhoe Riverside Penrith Lancaster Cuerdon Valley Any big plusses or minuses for any of those? I'd prefer to rule out running around a flat football pitch or similar, just looking for a nice option. If I've missed obvious ones out too (I could head through Leeds so some of those might be considered). |

We loved Lancaster. My 10yo still mentions it because they had some children playing brass instruments! Lovely route as well.

Penrith v accessible, has showers/coffee/cake which is good on a long drive (which is how I did it too). A bit "round some football pitches" but scenic with it. NB this was a couple of years ago so no guarantees.

Blackhill goes around some former football pitches but certainly isn't flat!

Wetherby is 3 laps all on grass next to the river, about 80-100 runners. I've done Rising Sun in Newcastle (Killingbeck, Benton area) which is a lovely run in a country park, really enjoyed that one. Not far off the A1 is Fountains Abbey near Ripon, you will struggle to find a prettier Park Run. |

Getting in and out of Lancaster in a car is a monumental PITA - and you'd have to go right round the one way system to go north. Which is a shame because it's a nice route if a little lumpy. Penrith would be very convenient (you could go acros sthe A66 to Scotch Corner) but is eminently forgettable - very much laps of football pitches - albeit football pitches beside a river. |
