The watches at Cambridge certainly go over 500. I've been timekeeper several times when that's happened. There are quite a few events regularly getting up to 800 every week. Seems funny that the makers of these watches put such a low limit on it - the memory required to store millions of results would cost only pennies.

Just to muddy the waters, at Brighton & Hove parkrun in Hove Park, we now have a watch that goes up to 2,000.

A couple of years ago, we had two volunteers who had a stopwatch each, that allegedly went up to 500. In actual fact, we found out the hard way, that they only actually went to something like 485 before they were full. Hence us running two stopwatches at our event.
It's to long a story for this forum, but eventually, the core team decided to buy a new stopwatch, the one that goes up to 2,000.

I was on volunteer coordinator duties yesterday, & one of the core team gave me a quick demo of the new watch. The only difference with the new watch is that the button you press to upload the results, is in a different position to the old watches.

I'm a bit behind with this thread, but having just read back a bit more, & in reference to LazyDaisy's post, we have, until we got the new watch, had a volunteer with the parkrun app on their iPhone on timing duties. Just as a back-up.

Low & behold, a few weeks ago, one of our stopwatches decided to "turn turtle" for want of a better phrase. Luckily, one of the core team had decided to test out the new app. At the end of the parkrun, we were able to download the results from his iPhone. Talk about saving the day. It would have meant giving 450 runners the same time of 59:59.

So, if all else fails, have a back-up timer with an iPhone. Trust me, it works.

We always have two watches and two timekeepers David. Added to which we on the core team are nearly all Android users! I do look forward to the app being available for Android though.

Hello LazyDaisy, I didn't realize that the app wasn't available on Android. Well, to be honest, I knew it was only available on iPhone originally, but wrongly assumed that the Android version would have been "rolled out" by now.
By some strange quirk of nature, down in Hove, we are all iPhone users. Just as well really.

Not only is it only available via the iPhone store, but it's only available on versions of IOS 10.0 or later. Talk about niche

Ran my first Parkrun in about 6 years yesterday, I was amazed how busy it was.
My one and only previous Parkrun had about 100 people there, if that. Yesterday had just shy of 500 there which was a shock to see at 9am on a Saturday morning 😀

I would have been tempted to reply that they should have gone faster but fortunately another RD with more tact than me replied to them! They did suggest to them that they might like to volunteer one week to see what was involved!

Before we got the larger capacity timekeeping devices at Braunstone the strategy if it looked like we were going to exceed 500 was for one timekeeper to stop at e.g. 450 and the other keep going to 500 then the other one would recommence.

When I was timer at Edinburgh there was a backup timer with 2 x stopwatches, each which also took 500 places. The first was used as a backup to me and the 2nd to capture anyone over 499 places (as place 1 was the start time). Edinburgh regularly gets over 500, bit n that day was just under - and no need for the backup as I seemed to do my job ok :-)
