I was next to useless at barcode scanning last Saturday. Anything that made it easier would be welcomed by me. Or at least confirmed how badly I was doing, in cases of doubt. (Some people, including one RD, said to me afterwards that they were not keen on doing scanning either).

Next volunteering, I think I will specify "no scanning". Actually, I probably won't need to :-o.

If the equipment comes to circa £780, where does the £3000+ set up cost come from? (I know there's also the costs with running the website, results processing etc, but still..._

Don't the events have to purchase additional kit themselves after they are up and running? The startup fees are to cover a couple of watches and scanners plus a laptop for event number 1, but any more than that they have to pony up for out of the donations made to the event fund.

setup is £5000 + VAT = £6000

Setup team needs to find half and the other half comes from donations / sponsorship.

This cost covers lifetime support / kit.

Thats what the £3000 external funding per event is for.
If they go down a route of expecting the volunteers to use their own devices, then they can no longer charge that amount for new parkruns.

Even if they bought cheap android devices instead, would they be up to doing the job week after week?

How much would a device cost that is as durable as the current scanners? (which are designed for stocktaking & so are very durable)
TEMPERATURE:
Operation: 32 to 104 °F (0 to 40 °C)
Storage: -4 to 140 °F (-20 to 60 °C)
PROTECTION RATE: IP 42
Now that IP rating isn't brilliant, but as you hold them in the hand they are unlikely to be exposed to a lot of rain, & with the lanyard you can't drop them.

I think realistically you would be looking at £150+ per device.
Also, there is no screen to worry about on the current scanners, & lanyard attachment points seem to have disappeared from modern phones, so you need to allow for a decent case. Another £20?

Then you also have to think about theft.

Is park run seriously limited by lack of funding? I've never seen any appeal for donations at any event I've been to. And there is always a bit of of sponsor-laden advertising. (Which I have no particular objection to, money has to come from somewhere.) I naively assumed that paid for everything.

I can’t imagine that these would be anything but leased by parkrun rather than owned or indeed provided by volunteers.

Surely buying and owning assets rather than leasing them is a risk to be avoided

Replacement stopwatches and scanners are provided by HQ and not from the parkruns own donation pot as do the additional tokens and devices when you reach certain thresholds. Anything with a sponsor logo on is provided centrally as well. Course signage and things like bollards/cones, walkie talkies etc have to come from the local pot (as did defibs until recently). If you need to replace the laptop you have to fund that separately too.

parkrun as an organisation certainly isn't flush with cash.

The start-up fee has to pay for all this as well as the ongoing costs (wages and computer systems) as well as a stipend towards future parkruns IIRC.

I'm with Charlie P on that replacing the scanners with an app that has a display telling you it has scanned should be more effective than the current scanners. I believe the current scanners are leases as defective ones go back although the timers are purchased.

I'd be amazed if there is a leasing option for scanners. And if you've got the readies available, leasing phones makes no sense as you'll just be paying premiums for the facility.

Just look at the usual paradigms for buying a mobile phone - contract including phone if you can't afford to splash the cash, but buy a sim free mobile and a sim only contract and you'll get much more bang for your buck.

How many would parkrun require - surely there is a bulk purchase discount to be negotiated compared to buying / leasing a single phone? It’s hardly a valid comparison
