Gret Run Local seems to use a thing that you wave near the phone of the timing person. Clever. Yes you pay, but 4.99 is comparable with cost of the plastic printed barcode at prakrun, and actually cheaper than the wrist band. Great Run Local timing options RECOMMENDED: Great Run Local Wristband £4.99 including postage and packaging Wristband Sm Wearable and convenient Scan against the event marshall's finish phone to record your finishing time Receive your complimentary result text message However, wtf are Great Run Local doing? Are they trying to compete with parkrun? Why would you have competitive free events?! I remember this coming up before, but where has Great Run Local got to? |

Looks like it hasn't really taken off. 18 across the whole of UK. it is a Wed evening 6.30pm for my "local" (not local - 50 miles away!) one, which would be quite good as an addition to the Saturday parkrun, should one be that way inclined. G

Haven't been to a GRL but i assume the system relies on participants scanning in finish order? Not going away having a chat and then scanning later, might not also be so good with multiple finish funnels. And who would provide the phone(s).

to be honest I found barcode scanning pretty hectic for about 15 mins and there is virtually no chance for interaction unless its sub 20 min runners or slower than 35 minute runners - I was basically scanning without a chance to even look up and just a quick thanks and well done What I did like on Saturday being a Marshall out on course were the number of people who said thanks as they passed by...... |

Son of a Pronator Man
Wednesday evening at 6.30 would be ok in the summer, a run on a summer's evening (if we were so lucky as to get some decent weather), but not so attarctive in the winter when it would be dark .

There are definitely some scanners out there that won't read the barcode on a phone. I tried it once a few years ago, it was my first time volunteering on scanning and I wasn't confident enough of the rules to say no without trying it. Of course nowadays, I would just say no right away. 😀

Surely mobile phones should be switched at start and finish so as not to interfere with electronic timing systems, same as on aeroplanes. So having barcode on phone is no good
