Seems like it is a good year for Gadwalls round here. In addition to the brood of eight near fully grown ducklings I mentioned yesterday we now have a brood of ten fluff balls in the same area and a brood of eight being reported near the Visitors Centre. We also have a another brood of three at my end of the res. Add in all the young mallards and tufties and the res looks like a big creche right now!

Loads of fulmar around the Great Orme this morning, more exciting was five choughs following us around. Beautiful birds, never seen them before.

Other sighting was a small thin bird with a speckled chest similar to a thrushes markings. Going through guide book at the moment, no winners yet.

bonners, you know your birds so I'm hesitant to suggest this, but 'a small thin bird with a speckled chest similar to a thrushes markings' would immediately suggest meadow pipit to me. Or maybe rock pipit if at Great Orme.

We seem to have been adopted by a racing pigeon ... almost to the stage where he's tapping on the window when he wants food. He knows he has water tray by the pool and mixed seeds (although he picks all the dark sunflower seeds out first) by the window.
It's tame enough to know when food is coming, and OK to be about 1 metre away - doesn't want to be caught or held. (but by the ring is a 2019 bird)

Cheers J2R, I reckon you're right. Definitely more meadow pipit than rock pipit I would say, just because of the size and the markings seem more spots than streaks if that makes sense. Difficult one to be sure which one, I always struggle with some of the smaller birds.

Love the cuckoo picture. Reminds me of seeing a juvenile Klaas’s Cuckoo being fed by a sunbird many years ago in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The size difference was amazing.

The Gadwall broods are showing a great survival rate here. The original brood of eight are now all nearly as big as mum and of the ten fluff balls I spotted last week at least 8 were visible this morning (though still very small they roam quite a way from mum and I hadn't any binos to check the far bank properly).

The Willow Tits have started reappearing on the feeders this week and have a single youngster in tow. Definitely the first time I've had that :-)

Took a trip out to Blacktoft last week and notched up 37 species, including green sands, loads of the snipe wandering around in the open, 14 spoonies, sedge & reed warblers, large numbers of sand martin, the first whitethroats of the year, and finished the day with a couple of obliging barn owls. It was getting on for 9pm when we finally left. Strangely given the woods, scrub and hedges, no robin or wren, and only saw a blackbird in the car park as we were leaving.

Didn't get ff's performing kingfisher unfortunately, and very low on raptors other than the marsh harriers and (probably) a very distant kestrel.

Now just need to sort through the photos, and see how many 100s I've got of warblers :)
