They were coming out of Christchurch harbour and looked like they were heading for Keyhaven.

My first Starling murmuration of the winter and it was right on my doorstep. Spotted it from the front window over the res that is less than 400m away. Hopefully they are settling in for the winter and a nightly show.

Also managed a few hours today at Old Moor and though is was relatively quite there were big flocks of Lapwing and Golden Plover, 3 Green Sandpipers, 3 Blackwits, Snipe, Linnets, a brief glimpse of a Marsh Harrier and a good selection of duck.

Green sand are beautiful elegant birds. Are they going to stay or are they passage migrants is the question nerd

First trip out to RSPB Middleton Lakes at the weekend. All the usual ducks and waterfowl, a GWE, and, a rarity for me, a female scaup hiding amongst the tufties and coot.

Middleton Lakes is a bit of a 'hidden' gem. Only discovered it last winter despite it being fairly local. During the freeze earlier in the year there was a very confiding water rail there, best/closest views I've ever had of one. Must get back there soon but today I'm off to see what is at Potteric Carr.

I was surprised when phal and co took us there at the weekend, as I'd lived nearby for 30-odd years and never known about it. However it appears it only opened, after being converted from aggregate quarries, in 2011, which was after I'd left the Midlands.

Strangely none of the Middleton's around Manc or Sheffield. It's near Tamworth / The Belfry

Interesting. Thanks. So you have lived in the Midlands and the Birmingham area then? ;-)
