Ours was a red-necked (juve iirc). We did the Rivock Edge fell race, had an hour in the now diffunct Bridge inn then went to see it in a tiny dew pond in the Aire Valley. There was a procession of birders streaming across the field and back to see it; a wonderful sighting (way too good to call simply a ‘tick’). Stef in particular was thrilled to see it

Grey Phals seem to be in abundance in Derbyshire this morning. There is now quite a lot of evidence that there are actually two present here and I'm now seeing reports of one at Loscoe as well. Notts seemed to get the Manx Shearwaters though. Always interesting to see what storm winds throw up at this time of year.

Now the winds have dropped a few Swallows reappeared in the yard this evening but it can't be many days until they are all gone until next spring.

Saw a few swallows on the Trent at Attenborough last night, swooping really quickly like they needing the food urgently.

Excited to spot a small bird of prey fly fast low over the garden fences, weaving with agility past the small trees. It had really distinctive white rump, markings and colouring suggesting a female hen harrier... except I'm in Coventry and, much as I like the idea, I really wouldn't expect to see a hen harrier swing past my back window... what else could it be?

C-Cat a Hen Harrier is also quite a large bird, not much smaller than a Buzzard. Behaviour/environment suggests Sparrowhawk but white rump doesn't. Peregrines have a pale rump and Hobbys are white below??

Anything else exciting blown in there Flanker?

Dawn run up Wolfscote Dale today checking the course for today's trail race. Good views of a couple of Dippers and four separate Grey Herons that were ignoring all the "Private Fishing" signs :-) Also had a squadron of Swallows later on over Heathcote village pond whilst I was doing a spot of marshalling.

Thank ff sparrowhawk was my first thought. It was the distinctive white rump that made me turn to the bird book... and here. Definitely lots smaller than the buzzards, which are plentiful around here.
