Also saw a couple of kingfishers the other day (Montgomery Canal, near Welshpool). Far too fast for me to get a photo - and once they hid/landed in a tree, impossible to see again.

someone in my village has seen a cowbird. In Hampshire.
In unrelated news, the pub is selling Old Rosie cider.

Lots of unidentified raptors when walking up Kinder Scout the other day. I suspect they were kestrels and also flushed out a pair of grouse.

I finally saw "my" kingfisher down at the river for the first time this year last week.

alpenrose, if it’s hovering it’s (99% likely to be) a kestrel

It was amazing watching one that was stock still in the air when the wind was blowing really strongly. :)

Buzzard can hover and barn / short-eared owl can ‘hang in the air’ while quartering but kestrel are the hover kings and queens

Keep forgetting to come in here and post. Been loads going on, with plenty of waders along the river etc. However highlight was yesterday, red kite spotted about half a mile from home, which means they've finally made it to the coast. Only a little thing, but quite exciting for me as I've been spotting them closer and closer to home each year.
