I’m going to the pub at lunchtime with my biggest customers. They will more than likely have a drink but I’ll be on the soft stuff

Nico is in fact 22 not out in the second innings :-)

Batting Dio, keep pushing the singles

Scorgers, loved the coffee stout too, although, like every other AF beer I've tried, they tend to get progressively less nice as you drink more. One ice cold bottle or can of most options is great, the second ok and by the third or fourth I usually get put off by the "artificial" after taste. Not a problem if you buy an odd bottle, but the Brewdogs come in boxes of 4 cans, and some others in packs of 6.

I find an additional benefit of the AF beers is that one is usually enough :-) Generally fewer calories than real beer too, though that may not be a firm rule.

Picked up a random bottle of Adnams AF wine cos it was being pushed in the supermarket for dry January, it wasn't exactly great but went ok with food and meant one fewer bottle of wine.

Had a devilish thought earlier that it’d be nice to start drinking for a while so I could enjoy the benefits of giving up all over again.

I might, but not today.

If I have a "heavy" AF drinking night I'll have 4. Very infrequently more than that.

The wife has decided she likes Punk AF. I have decided this is a Good Thing.

Hazy AF is like a wheat beer style, I thought Nicho, rather than IPA? It was good though.

I couldn't drink 4 AF beers, I don't think. 2 x 500ml / pints at most. Maybe 3 of the week 330ml bottles over an afternoon or evening.

I'm so happy at the amount of alco-free drinks choice coming online. Gordons and Tonic, alco free gin, with a hint of citrus. Really nice. Over priced but cheaper than alcohol, so I'll take it! :-) G

I have tried a couple of the AF lagers when out for a quick pub dinner (I would normally consume 2 large wines to OHs 1 pint). They are OK and I have found that 1 bottle is enough. I also sometimes have the RA cider but as it is quite sweet I tend to drink it like pop. I have also tried the Eisberg wines, red is my preferred - again I only have 1 large glass and leave the rest to another day(s).

Not seen the Brewdog Raspberry one. Nanny State is very drinkable. In fact, I often used to choose that before I went on the wagon.

About This Thread

Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Some acronyms, in case people use them:

ODAAT - One day at a time
KIS - Keep it simple

New feature: article/blog of the month (period may change randomly!) Swittle's wonderful 14,611 days blog: (see links below)

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

And a great list of Alternative Drinks started by the lovely LindsD:

Please add to these articles and make them as valuable as possible! Thanks! :-) G

And one from way back when...

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
