If my smartphone contained one of the plethora of betting apps that are flogged in every ad break during football matches, I would have had a tenner on a Spain win at half-time. 3 well-taken goals but I thought the scoreline flattered England at half-time.

Fenners - if that was cross referenced by number of appearances that would be helpful, otherwise it's like that study in the US just released that shows the way to decrease your medical insurance bills is to smoke and drink more.

Its the kind of stat that will tell you that goals to minutes played ratio makes David Nugent the greatest ever England striker.

Could well be WS but I do recall one sub appearance from Nugent and a poxy goal, by Fenners stats that clearly makes him about 10 million times better than Sterling. Fwiw I think Sterling is a good player, but no more than that. |

I remember going to lots of England games with the new great striker back in the 70s/80s. Reeves was one, Woodcock, Francis, Hateley, that guy from Forest. I reckon any simple stat about goals is a bit misleading. Tony Adams got 5 in 66, John Barnes got 11 in 79, Steve Bull got 4 in 13, lots of odd numbers, Peter Crouch got 22 in 42 for crying out loud. Who is the better footballer Crouch or Sterling? I forgot the game was on TBH. |

Garry Birtles. Or Peter Davenport? Comparing players who do different jobs, or play in different positions or in different ways, is inherently pointless. A bit po-faced, but true. Was Nugent's England goal poked in from half a yard when it was going to go in anyway? Or am I conflating two different events there? |

Wiki has: """On 28 March 2007, Nugent made his debut as a late substitute for England in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying match against Andorra in Barcelona.[44] He marked the occasion by scoring the final goal in a 3–0 win in the 93rd minute, tapping in a goal-bound shot from Jermain Defoe as it was about to cross the line.[44] Nugent, in his post-match press interview, expressed genuine satisfaction over having accomplished a "1 Goal/1 Cap" national team record; Nugent is one of just three players to have exactly one substitute appearance and one goal for England, the others being Paul Goddard and Francis Jeffers.[45] Nugent has not been capped since, and his 11 minute England national career is the shortest of any player who has scored for the team.""" Beautiful. That it was Andorra too, is perfect. |

Well done England. Remarkable result. From Marca "Spain returned to mediocrity in the face of England's speed and the precision of Harry Kane, who offered a masterclass in how to be a great forward without scoring." (I've stayed a couple of minutes walk from last night's stadium, Hotel Silken; very nice, if you are ever visiting Sevilla.) |
