I’m thinking of running Abindgon Marathon this year and having a crack at sub 3. Is the course relatively flat? Suitable for a sub 3 attempt?

A good friend/clubmate of mine used to swear by Abingdon and target it for an Autumn marathon PB attempt each year.

Abingdon is a good flat, fast course with a strong field. There is a little bit of trail (hard packed but more or less single file) but it doesn't seem to slow it down much.

Maybe WW will add his thoughts on Abingdon A decent workout today, 4x 10 mins and covered more ground in that time than I've managed previously. Must have recovered pretty well from Sunday's race which supports my thoughts on being a bit tired going into that. I seem to be alternating between better and worse quality sessions, if I really put everything into one then I'm not fully recovered for the next one, conversely if I'm a bit tired and toil through a workout then I can bounce back quickly. On balance I think I'm pleased some of them are going well rather than disappointed that they aren't all! Today in particular not using the VF shoes suggests I may still be making some progress physically, its not all about the shoes even if most of it is 12 weeks down, 6 to go so only a few more serious sessions left now before I start tapering. Gulp. |

Gulp indeed JDA, I'm in the same boat in having the marathon 6 weeks away, and my first test of where I am will be the HM in a fortnight, I'm thinking I'll set off at 5:50 pace and see what that brings HR wise when that settles and then adjust accordingly. I'm also definitely carrying a bit more fatigue recently as I've noticed getting a little more tetchy (probably slightly in calorie deficit overall in an attempt to lose a couple of pounds). |

Agree with the others Abingdon is a good flat course. There's only a few minor undulations, couple of underpasses and a bit of dodging road furniture that make it not perfect. It's also a strong field, and plenty of space so no getting boxed in. How are you planning to structure your taper jda? I've played around with tapering in the past and not sure I've ever got it quite right. I'm planning something like this at the moment. Thoughts welcome! 6 weeks out: 85mpw 5 weeks out: 80mpw 4 weeks out: 80mpw (incl. last 20miler) 3 weeks out: 65mpw 2 weeks out: 45mpw Final week: 0-15mpw |

Paul, the Dentdale Race is 4 weeks out, I'll try to keep mileage up right up to 2 weeks out. Historically I feel that I have generally recovered quite fast (but note I only max out at about 60mpw anyway).

Abingdon is super tough. If you sub 3 there than you are like some kind of Greek god.
