Jda. You have been training hard and also had a big run midweek which would be a factor. Still a cracking half in my opinion.

Good point Baz, being able to run a HM quicker than marathon pace just 3 days after a 20 mile run is definitely not bad.

Also what WW said with the effort to go out maybe 30 seconds quicker than your best pace on that day costing you overall - I can say that from experience ☺️

Sorry jda, not many runners would PB a hm without some kind of taper (particularly if they run a 20 miler a few days before)

Glad to hear you've still got it Gobi...at least in theory :-)

Bit of reflection suggests maybe today wasn't quite such a disaster - I'm sure conditions were slower than last year (though rbr will be the arbiter in a couple of days...) and I did go into it completely untapered this time, having run 40 miles in the past three days. And it seems like I managed to be 1st V50 :-)

Ni idea what's going on with the stomach. It started to be an issue a couple of years ago but I thought I'd solved it with a change of race day breakfast etc, now it appears it's back to the drawing board. It's not nerves, something to do with running at effort.

Glad you're feeling better about your race jda.

sounds a bit...shit...LMH. Hope you find a way to control things.

rbr scores the blackpool half at a 1.4 which is significantly slower than last year's 1.1, and suggests I put in a decent (not great) performance for the conditions. Not sure how stable or reliable these ratings are but it's reasonably consistent with what I had concluded. Not many PBs on show in the results.

Just to show that you never know what you're going to get I had a great, progressive 20 mile run this morning - my fastest so far this year. Mark is going to do Retford Half on the 10th March so I need to decide whether to join him or not, can't say I enjoyed it much last year (though I did sneak a 1 sec PB) but I don't have any races other than Ashby (which I don't 'race') entered before VLM.

Sounds good LMH, I'll be doing Retford and decided last night that I will be racing it. I thought before that I might run it at Marathon effort but with it being 4 weeks out I reckon it's safe to give it full beans and try for a PB. I know a few others who'll be doing it and one lad I know is after going sub 1:17 (arghh). He's someone I'm very closely matched with and reckon I might get drawn in to racing him.

I've no real idea where I am race wise at the moment as I've not raced in ages (not even a parkrun since early Jan) but surely the extra miles sprinkled with marathon pace and a few progressions should mean I'm in pretty decent race shape when I don a number. I'm also hoping that a HM feels pretty short after recent longer runs.

jda - I wouldn't have expected the Blackpool hm to be a PB course - the only time I've done it, it was blowing a gale - I guess that is one thing which may put off PB chasers. I'd recommend the Wrexham half which was also last weekend - many local runners have clocked their PB there. There is usually a good field there, which has to be more inductive to quicker times at the business end of the race
