I find I sweat through to the battery compartment Gus, I've tried fresh batteries. Maybe next time I'll go for a HRM-Tri, they're waterproof I think

Pegg, I don’t want to reopen an old debate, but why do you feel the need for a chest strap rather than relying on the wrist based HR? I’ve switched between both in the past as the wrist based have evolved. To me the recent versions (645 for me) work fine.

The straps on HRM perish after a while, 10-15 is outstanding. There are 2 types of new one. Either with the module integrated (HRM-Run/Tri/Swim), or not (HRM-Dual). The swappable modules like on the dual are considered more budget and less accurate, but you can change the strap if they become unreliable. They are also cheaper. That said, I find optical on the new Garmins, like 245, 645 and 945 as good as a strap these days and so don’t wear a strap. YMMV, optical doesn’t work for everyone, but it works for me when I tighten the wrist strap one notch past how I normally wear it

I have an old, but unused 610 strap if wanted ... no idea if they are compatible with other models

puzzler, while optical might work for you it doesn't for everyone. I get far more reliable data from the the strap. Plus the strap also gives you all the extra run dynamics data you can't get from the optical. And finally, in winter optical can be a pain as it means your watch can need to be under several layers!

You can get the extra dynamics data from the RD Pod when using optical. You are right about the cold, optical struggles sometimes, but then again, you need to really wet your strap in the winter to avoid spurious data at the beginning of a run.

I use the chest strap HRM because I was told it was more accurate than the one on the watch itself?

It's a treadmill at home so it won't be picking up from other people. It is an old treadmill though (I've had it for 18 years - it felt like an expensive luxury at £400 but it's saved me a lot more in gym memberships!) so maybe it's interfering with the HRM??

When you mention 'extra dynamics' chunkywizard, what are you including in that?

Flanker, I agree that some people don’t get on with optical. I was just thinking that in the situation Pegg describes where optical is giving roughly sensible numbers and the chest strap is all over the place, my reaction would be to stick with optical rather than get a new chest strap.

Pegg, it depends what level of precision you need. I know that I don’t know my maximum HR with any degree of certainty so I just use HR for ball park zones.

From Garmin:

The Running Dynamics Pod has an accelerometer in the module that measures torso movement to calculate these 6 running metrics:

Cadence is the number of steps per minute. It displays the total steps (right and left combined).
Ground contact time balance displays the left/right balance of your ground contact time while running. It displays a percentage. For example, 53.2 with an arrow pointing left or right.
Stride length is the length of your stride from 1 footfall to the next. It is measured in meters.
Vertical oscillation is your bounce while running. It displays the vertical motion of your torso, measured in centimeters for each step.
Vertical ratio is the ratio of vertical oscillation to stride length. It displays a percentage. A lower number typically indicates better running form.
Ground contact time is the amount of time in each step that you spend on the ground while running. It is measured in milliseconds.
