When I bought my poles I spent hours doing research which ones would suit me best and went Mountain king carbon and loved them but the faffy strings with toggles annoyed me so I kept the poles assembled most of the time - when I needed to collapse for air travel I couldn't collapse them did eventually get them down enough to pack but then couldn't get them to go back together so ended up needing to buy some Black diamond Z poles Chamonix which had been a close 2nd place on original research, I've only used them twice but I already much prefer them, they are adjustable for height (within a certain range of course) and just feel more solid which if you're a heffer like me is good yes they are heavier than the mountain king but I don't think i'll go back to my MK very often once I do manage to get them apart properly.

A bit of silicone spray will persuade carbon fibre joints to let go. Wipe it down with a bit of degreaser afterwards though.

Yes I've been apprehensive to give anything a go as google searching suggested whatever you do don't use WD40 but the advice given direct from mountain King was "use WD40" confused .com ........

Silicone is a bit more benign that WD40 or GT5. You really do need to clean it well afterwards though, surgical spirit is best.

Whilst we're talking about mending things: The hem has come down on my rain jacket, which means the cord to tighten it is hanging free and not working. Any idea how to fix the hem? I wondered if the seam tape I have for tent emergencies would work? |

Probably. Or sew it and then waterproof it (if you are that worried) with seam sealant. All the holes in my waterproofs are repaired with good quality duct tape (Duck or Gorilla) and last through wearing and washing. Or Alpkit do a repair service for all brands of kit. |
