My boy is saving up for, and very much hankering after an Xbox. He's very nearly there thanks to a combination of pocket money, Easter money from family in Wales, and Arnie leaving him £10 in his will.

At the moment, on Amazon they are £179.99 for the 250GB version, and £139.99 for the 4GB version. I'm a bit gutted, because one night they brought the price of the 250GB one down to £149.99, but by the following morning it had gone back up.

Just wondering...

1) is the 250GB worth it?
2) are there any cheaper places to buy one new?

I dont use mine much anymore, but I never used the hard-drive when I did.
I think its for downloading fillums and things, but I never really found out.

I think the boys here use it for downloading games from the Xbox marketplace - and some of the games you get on disc want to save big chunks of data onto the hard drive.

I don't think Jnr is on Fetch, so I shouldn't be giving the game away :-) I'm in the process of purchasing an Xbox 360 at the moment for his birthday.

I've found Shopto.net to have the best prices for the 250gb base unit £159.99 shopto.net
We're going to get the 250gb base unit, with a separate Kinect with Kinect adventures and London 2012 game - works out less than buying the same items bundled together.

Shopto.net are fine, I've bought a Nintendo DSi and a few games from them in the past, always quick delivery and competitive pricing.

PS I had a quick scour round the real shops (not online!) this morning and they seem to be £20 for most hardware bundles than Shopto.

If your boy is into Star Wars, this seems a pretty good buy... shopto.net

I think 250gb is needed now as it seems that games are slowly going away from being sold on disk and increasingly sold as downloads.

Yes to the 250 gb definitely worth it, based on a 13 years old recommendation along with the rest of his mates.

With regards to Amazon watch the price, apparently certain items fluctuate in price its just a case of being patient.

There is the option of buying something that's traded in, although from what I've seen the price is only £10-20 lower than buying brand new if you can get a base unit for £150-160.

4GB is very small as games now install things onto the hard-drive (makes loading quicker), and also patches etc. Together with the Marketplace stuff you have already mentioned. They can buy full retail games from there as well, though they tend to be cheaper on the internet/high street with offers and such.

Shopto have been very good in the past (haven't used them for a year due to lack of cash!), if it's do-able, I'd say stretch to the 250 for sure.

I would get the one with the 250GB hard drive, definately worth it 4GB is no good to anyone in my opinion. I have the older XBox with a 60GB hard drive which is ample for me but 4GB is just not enough. Check Argos, sometimes they have good deals on XBox

Going for it with the 250GB edition - thanks all for the advice and the link to shopto. Unfortunately, they have a problem with card payments at the moment, but fingers crossed it'll be working soon :-)
