I "owned" singles by Slade and Gary Glitter when I was a nipper and also had albums by Showaddywaddy and the Beach Boys (the latter because I liked the advert that was on TV promoting it, rather than the music itself). Then when I hit my teens and got properly into music, the first singles I bought for myself would have been: Rat Trap - Boomtown Rats Cool for Cats - Squeeze Hit me with your Rhythm Stick - Ian Dury and the Blockheads. I didn't buy albums, couldn't afford them, but got a few as birthday / xmas gifts. The first one I bought with my own dough was probably The Fine Art of Surfacing by the Boomtown Rats which remains a favourite. Stone cold classic and under-appreciated. First cd bought was either Out of Tme by REM or Don't Try This at Home by Billy Bragg. I had a Britannia subscription for a while (remember those?) and would buy a couple of CDs every month but by definition they were mostly oldies and compilations rather than new or chart stuff. First MP3 download? No idea. |
